Gahanna combines expansive parkland with forest swamps, river access, and a distinctive herbal tradition. The city owns and maintains 759 acres of parkland across 52 parks and green spaces. This gives you a range of options for your trip: botanical discoveries, paths through natural habitats, paddling on Big Walnut Creek, or activities centered on herbs.

Parks and Botanical Discoveries

The Big Walnut Trail is part of the Central Ohio Greenways system. Another highlight for plant enthusiasts is Creekside Park & Arboretum: It is certified as a Level 1 arboretum and features more than 25 labeled tree and shrub species. The signs make the variety of woody plants a tangible focus for a park visit, rather than drawing attention only to the green space as a whole.

The history of the Gahanna Municipal Gardens is also connected to herbs. The gardens were established next to City Hall in 1975 and officially dedicated and named the Geroux Herb Garden in 2002. Those interested in the development of this municipal garden can find here a different perspective on Gahanna’s herbal theme than at the Ohio Herb Center’s courses and workshops.

Forest Swamps and Big Walnut Creek

At Gahanna Woods & State Nature Preserve, dirt paths and boardwalks lead to seasonal forest swamps. There, a variety of wildflowers as well as interesting shrubs and trees grow. This landscape offers a clear contrast to the manicured gardens and labeled trees at Creekside Park & Arboretum. When choosing nature experiences, you can therefore distinguish between a forest area with seasonal wetlands and a park with botanical signage.

Water is another option: Several parks in Gahanna offer access for paddling on Big Walnut Creek. Sections of the river are designated as the Central Ohio Blueway. This means you can choose water-based experiences in addition to paths through parks and forests. As you plan, consider whether you would rather focus your stay on green spaces, forest swamps, or the river.

Herbs, History, and Hands-On Activities

The Ohio Herb Center is housed in the Nafzger-Miller House in Gahanna. The building is listed on the National Register of Historical Places; its oldest section dates to 1855. The center offers courses and workshops on topics such as tea blending, homemade herbal cosmetics, and practical herb care for the home. The range of activities spans everything from preparing herbs to using them in everyday life.

Another herbal attraction connects Gahanna with seasonal drinks: the Herbal Cocktail Trail runs through the city and features drinks made with herbs. The Herbal Cocktail Trail Passport is available at the Ohio Herb Center. You receive a stamp for each drink purchased at a participating business. Together with the courses and the history of the Geroux Herb Garden, the trail offers a distinct way to explore Gahanna’s connection to herbs.

When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home in Gahanna, these different interests can help guide your decision: Would you like to focus on parks and plants, are you particularly interested in forests and water, or are you looking for experiences involving herbs and their uses? Your answer can help you decide on the focus of your trip without combining the different offerings into a single itinerary.
