Discover Galion: History, Railroads, and Nature
Accommodation in Galion
Galion offers plenty of reasons to explore: a Victorian mansion with original furnishings, insights into local railroad history, live performances, and ways to spend time outdoors. When planning your vacation, consider which of these aspects of the town interests you most. History and nature are options, as are a visit to the theater or the municipal swimming pool.
Brownella Cottage and Galion’s History
Brownella Cottage is a Victorian mansion dating from 1887 that has retained its original furnishings. During its open season, from May to December, it is open for private tours by appointment. If you plan to include the house in your itinerary, bear this requirement in mind: tours are not available without an appointment. The Galion History Museum is located in the carriage house at Brownella Cottage. This site therefore offers both the mansion and an introduction to Galion’s history.
Brownella Cottage and Grace Episcopal Church were added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 27, 1980. In fall 2021, the Hayden-Helfrich Annex was also officially added to the campus. It displays oversized artifacts focused on Galion’s industries, business community, and schools. These themes offer different ways to explore local history: from the historic house to objects from everyday life in town, and on to work, commerce, and education.
Railroad History and Theater
The Big Four Depot opened in 1900 and served as the division headquarters of the Cleveland, Chicago, Cincinnati, and St. Louis Railroad. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The site offers a self-guided tour: text messages and photos tell the story of the depot and the local railroad. If you want to explore Galion’s railroad past, you can plan this tour as a focus of your visit.
The Galion Community Theatre offers another kind of culture, presenting several live performances each year. When choosing your travel dates, you can also consider whether a stage performance would suit your stay.
Green Spaces, Water, and Activities
Amann Reservoir has walking areas and natural parkland to the north and south. It’s a place to combine an outing with exercise and time in nature. If you’d rather plan an activity on the water, Amick Reservoir offers fishing. Amann Reservoir and Amick Reservoir are separate destinations, each with its own offerings.
A short distance from Galion, you’ll find the Lowe-Volk Park Nature Center. If you’re focusing on nature, you can consider it as another destination alongside the attractions in Galion. Heise Park is home to Galion’s municipal swimming pool, operated by the Galion Community Center YMCA. Walking areas, natural parkland, fishing, and the municipal swimming pool are among the different options that may suit your interests.
