Those looking for a longer route will also find a wooded 6.3-mile mountain biking trail there, which can also be used for hiking and trail running. Wine Tastings and the History of the Yadkin Valley

Dobson is the birthplace of the Yadkin Valley American Viticultural Area, North Carolina’s first federally recognized wine region. This regional distinction can be turned into tangible travel experiences at various wineries. Shelton Vineyards offers classic and select wine tastings at a spacious tasting bar. Grand Reserve and Signature tastings are available for groups of two or more by reservation. The winery also includes an amphitheater, a gift shop, and picnic areas.

At Haze Gray Vineyards, guided tastings are led by knowledgeable staff. Regular events there include food trucks, live music, painting classes, and special wine pairings. Surry Cellars offers tours by appointment only from Tuesday through Friday, when Surry Community College is open. For another perspective on wine, Stony Knoll Vineyards has a tasting room and a covered brick outdoor veranda. Both areas overlook the winery’s landscaped vineyard grounds, set against a mountain backdrop.

Seasonal Outings and Local Events

Seasonal destinations are also a good option for families with children or mixed-interest travel groups. In the fall, from mid-September through October, The Farm offers a pumpkin patch, a corn maze, hayrides, sunflowers, and apple cannons. In spring, usually from late April through late May, visitors can pick strawberries there. Christmas at The Farm includes hayrides to large light displays and a walk-through light maze. MacJordan Eventing offers private 45-minute riding lessons for people ages 3 and up.

Dobson Square Park has the only splash pad in Surry County. The park also includes a bandstand, a playground, walking paths, picnic shelters, and restrooms. Farmers markets are held there on Thursdays from April through November. Those who want to discover local specialties can also visit Harvest Grill at Shelton Vineyards, one of five stops on the Surry Sonker Trail.
