Scotland County can be explored through a range of different themes: the Lumber River, the Sandhills landscape, and a rich cultural history. There are also museums, festivals, and activities for cycling and motorsports. Which of these sides you want to experience can help guide your trip and your search for a vacation rental.

Lumber River, Sandhills, and Cycling

The Lumber River is the only blackwater river in North Carolina designated as a National Wild and Scenic River. The section of the river in Scotland County is undeveloped along nearly its entire length. Both access areas of Lumber River State Park have camping facilities.

The Sandhills habitat also shapes the natural landscape: longleaf pines and scrubby blackjack oaks alternate with bogs and cypress swamps. The river landscape and the Sandhills represent different nature themes that you can include in your travel plans independently of one another.

For cyclists, Scotland County has a 147-mile bicycle route system with three numbered, signposted routes and several unmarked connecting routes. The routes pass through mostly flat terrain with occasional small hills. If you are planning a ride, it is a good idea to check the latest route information.

Discover History and Culture

The approximately 100-year-old John Blue House offers insight into Scotland County’s past and the culture of rural Carolina. The John Blue House and Heritage Center also includes a 100-year-old tobacco barn, the Tobacco Barn. In Heritage Village, relocated houses and other buildings illustrate rural Carolina culture in the late 19th century.

A restored early 20th-century shop, the General Store, is presented as an exhibit. The Museum of Agriculture and History focuses on agricultural and textile machinery as well as early farming equipment. Its collections also include classic cars, a historic fire engine, model trains, local art, and artifacts from the American Civil War.

The Carolinas Indian Museum showcases the lives of Indigenous people of the Carolinas. Exhibits include an original canoe, projectile points, pottery, and old stone tools. Together with the historic buildings and agricultural collections, the museum offers another way to explore the region’s cultural history.

Festivals, Vineyards, and Motorsports

The annual John Blue Cotton Festival combines tours of the house and early 19th-century cabins with historical and entertaining activities. These include a mule-powered cotton gin, antique tractors, train rides, arts and crafts, hayrides, and children’s games. Kuumba is another annual event: this celebration of African American culture features dance, drumming, storytelling, socializing, and gospel and jazz music.

Cypress Bend Vineyards grows Muscadine grapes, also known as Scuppernong, and offers tastings and tours. The winery hosts the Fall Harvest and Grape Stomp every year in early September. If you are planning your trip around a festival, check the dates and program in advance.

The Outback Motorsports Complex has tracks and natural terrain obstacles for dirt bikes, ATVs, side-by-sides, and off-road vehicles. Numerous racing events take place there throughout the year, and concerts are also held on the grounds. Check current operating conditions and event dates before visiting.

Find the Right Vacation Rental for Your Trip

First, consider which experiences you want to focus on during your stay: nature and cycling, historical collections, a festival, or motorsports. This makes it easier to tailor your vacation rental search to your travel plans and compare the locations of specific accommodations with the places you want to visit. If you have a particular event in mind, it is worth checking its date and program in advance.
