Mecklenburg: Nature, History and Discoveries

Mecklenburg combines expansive nature with accessible history and experiences that allow families to bring together a range of interests. Throughout Mecklenburg County, the parks and recreation department manages more than 8,300 acres of nature preserves. Four nature centers and a nature area at Eastway Regional Recreation Center offer environmental education programs and general visitor information. This gives you ideas for active days as well as peaceful ways to get to know the landscape more mindfully.

Nature Experiences Along Greenways and Waterways

Anyone who wants to discover Mecklenburg by bicycle will find opportunities at the nature sites to ride on off-road trails or paved greenways. Depending on the type of outing you want, you can choose between different kinds of paths without committing to a specific route or duration. Fishing is also possible at pond and river locations. For days on the water, boating and paddling by canoe, kayak or paddleboard are available.

The Whitewater Center trail network is maintained for public use. Important for planning: access is possible only via official trail entrances from the Whitewater Center grounds. History to See and Hear

The Trail of History runs along the urban section of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway. Representative statues preserve the significance of people who contributed to the history, growth and development of Mecklenburg County. The trail currently includes eleven statue locations in Midtown Charlotte and combines historical remembrance with time spent in an urban setting.

The Raptor Trail at Latta Nature Preserve also focuses on hands-on interpretation. The three-quarter-mile zoo education trail introduces more than 30 feathered ambassador birds and focuses on birds of prey. This works well as a stand-alone activity for visitors who want to experience nature not only through trails and landscapes, but also through wildlife observation and learning.

The 1774 Homesite provides another way to connect with the past. The 1774 Rock House can be entered as part of a docent-led tour offered by the museum. General admission includes current exhibitions, docent-led tours and self-guided exploration of the historic grounds. In addition, the 1774 Homesite offers a self-guided audio tour lasting approximately 40 minutes.

Places with a History of Their Own

The historic Siloam School is one of the oldest surviving African American schoolhouses in Mecklenburg County. At the same time, it is one of the last remaining schools from the Rosenwald era in the local community. The museum uses Siloam School as an educational resource. Historic Rosedale complements this historical range with tours that share the stories of the people who lived and worked at Rosedale. The site includes 8.9 acres of urban green space with gardens and wooded areas that invite visitors to walk and explore.

Science as a Shared Experience

Discovery Place Science offers an interactive science museum with hands-on exhibits. Together with the Raptor Trail, the nature centers and the historical attractions, it creates a diverse range of options for vacation days with different focuses.
