Lee offers reasons to enjoy a wide variety of vacation days: you might focus on paved trails, a large park, river activities, or historical and cultural topics. When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to first sort out these interests. Trails, water activities, theater, and historic sites appeal to different preferences and give your trip planning specific points of focus.

Nature and outdoor activity between park, trail, and river

San-Lee Park covers 177 acres, giving the nature theme a clear scale. The Endor Iron Furnace Greenway is more specifically defined: the trail is 1.43 miles long, paved, and intended for walking, running, and cycling. The comparison helps with planning. If you are looking for a precisely measured route with a paved surface, you can consider the Greenway; the park’s acreage offers a different guide for choosing destinations.

Options on the water also vary by activity. At McIver Canoe Park and the US-421 bridge at Cumnock, boat ramps provide kayak access to the Deep River. At the Avent Ferry ramp, motorboats, canoes, and kayaks can be launched for fishing on the state’s longest river. Your choice therefore depends on whether kayak access to the Deep River or fishing with different types of boats is your priority.

To reach San-Lee Park, take Exit 70 A on Route 1 for the Lillington/421 Bypass, or Exit 145 for Kelly Drive toward the park. Check road conditions before setting out.

Art and theater in Sanford

In Sanford, several cultural themes come together. The city’s public art program includes a total of 16 murals, as well as several interactive artworks and sculptures. The Temple Theatre was built in 1925 as a vaudeville theater. The Temple Academy offers classes, holiday camps, and performances year-round for students of all ages. This brings together public art, the history of a theater building, and an educational program focused on the performing arts.

The Temple Academy is especially interesting if you would also like to consider cultural activities for children and young people when planning your trip: its program is for students of all ages. At the same time, the Temple Theatre’s year of construction tells another part of theater history. If you choose Sanford as a cultural focus, you can therefore include its public artworks, theater history, and the Academy’s offerings in your plans.

Historic sites and different layers of time

House in the Horseshoe connects architectural history with an event from the American Revolution. The house was built around 1770 and attacked in 1781 by British Loyalists led by David Fanning. The antiques on display there include pieces from the Colonial and Revolutionary periods. As of September 2026, House in the Horseshoe was temporarily closed until further notice while construction was underway on a new visitor center. Check before visiting to see whether it is still closed.

Other historical sites offer different points of interest: the historic Railroad House was built in 1872 for the stationmaster of the Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad. Ole Gilliam Mill is a reproduction of the original Gilliam Mill, built in 1850. Together with the Temple Theatre’s construction date, these sites form a timeline from the late 18th century through the mill and Railroad House to the 1925 vaudeville theater. When planning, you can decide whether you are most interested in Revolutionary history, railroad history, historic mills, or theater history.

Use your vacation focus as a guide

When looking for a vacation rental, start by considering which experiences you want to shape your trip. If you are planning time for trails and water activities, you can consider San-Lee Park, the Greenway, and the river access points mentioned above. If art, theater, and history matter more, Sanford offers a different cultural focus; if you plan to visit House in the Horseshoe, check current access in advance.
