Duck is a coastal town with a variety of vacation experiences: sandy beaches, Currituck Sound and natural areas. Duck is designated as a bird sanctuary; Kitty Hawk Woods also includes part of Duck. You can plan your stay around the beach, trails, water activities or culture. For families, it can be helpful to treat daily activities and beach access requirements as separate planning questions. The mix you want will shape what to look for in a vacation rental, while beach access depends on a specific lodging requirement.

Consider Beach Access When Choosing a Vacation Rental

The Town of Duck does not own or maintain public beach accesses. The seven-mile sandy beach is reserved for residents and visitors staying in vacation homes or hotels. So when choosing a vacation rental, check the specific beach access arrangements with the accommodation provider. This requirement should factor into your choice of location and accommodation, not just your daily itinerary.

Trails Between the Sound and the Park

The Duck Boardwalk runs for just under a mile along Currituck Sound. It can be accessed from Duck Town Park and other locations in the Village Commercial District. The Duck Trail & Boardwalk is 7.8 miles long. These different distances offer different scales for planning: the trail is open to pedestrians, cyclists and inline skaters; the boardwalk provides access to kayaks and canoes. You can choose between a route along the waterfront and a longer trail, and include water activities as well.

Duck Town Park covers 11 acres. Its trails pass through maritime forest and willow swamp; the park also has a public launch ramp for kayaks and canoes. The park is open from sunrise to sunset and is also one of the access points to the Duck Boardwalk. If you plan to visit the park and waterfront trail on the same day, keep these hours in mind.

The Duck Kayak Tour passes through the salt marshes and open waters of Currituck Sound in the northern part of the Outer Banks. It complements trails on land with a tour on the water. Tour details may change, so check the provider's current information before making plans.

A Different Focus: Art and Music

Rotating Art Shows at Duck Town Hall feature works by local artists and organizations year-round. This gives your stay a cultural focus alongside trails, nature and water. In 2026, the Concert on the Green series offers free live music on the Town Green on Thursday evenings. Schedules may change, so check the event dates for your travel period.

For planning a trip together, it helps to consider beach access, daily activities and event dates separately: beach access depends on your type of lodging, the park has set opening hours, and concerts have a 2026 program. This lets you distinguish fixed requirements from optional activities and focus your vacation rental search on the experiences that matter most to you.
