The Wilson Center for Nature Discovery complements these landscape experiences with interactive exhibits on the natural history, flora, fauna, geology, and weather of Grandfather Mountain.

Sugar Mountain Resort offers 125 acres of ski terrain, 20 trails, and 14 trails illuminated for night skiing and snowboarding. When conditions are suitable, tubing sessions lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes each are available there. The Summit Express transports pedestrians and mountain bikers to the 5,300-foot summit of Sugar Mountain. The bike park includes trails for experts as well as beginners and intermediate riders.
Beech Mountain Resort’s summer offerings also include mountain biking and scenic chairlift rides. The Avery County Historical Museum, located in the original county jail, focuses on local railroads, military history, medical and educational development, as well as mountain music and mountain dancing. The museum also preserves research materials on local history and family genealogies.
The regional event calendar includes the annual Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk, jointly organized by the Avery County Chamber of Commerce and the Banner Elk Kiwanis Club. More Discoveries in the County
The Linn Cove Viaduct was completed in Avery County as part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The curved viaduct spans 1,243 feet and runs along an ecologically sensitive area of Grandfather Mountain. The Cranberry Mines were operated from approximately 1826 through the 1930s and supplied iron to the Confederacy. The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail runs over Yellow Mountain through Avery County and crosses the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in Pisgah National Forest in Avery County.
The trails at Linville Falls also pass through the remnants of an original hemlock forest. The trail to Linville Gorge begins at the visitor center and is 1.4 miles long round trip. The range therefore extends from short, clearly defined excursion destinations to longer hiking options and historical topics.
