Wyoming County: Gorges, Nature Trails, and History

Wyoming County in the state of New York combines impressive landscapes with unusual historical experiences. Letchworth State Park is particularly impressive. Interactive exhibits and programs provide an additional way to engage with the landscape.

The Autism Nature Trail, or A.N.T. for short, offers a special trail experience. The accessible trail is one mile long and includes eight different sensory stations. If you would like to plan a longer route, the Genesee Valley Greenway is a 90-mile public multi-use trail from Rochester to Cuba, New York. In Wyoming County, it runs south of Portageville along the Genesee River and includes natural and historic resources. The ranger-led Tour of Mount Morris Dam takes approximately one hour and includes a steep, one-mile section through the Genesee River Gorge to the top of Mount Morris Dam. Silver Lake State Park has a boat launch for boating and fishing on the lake. In addition, 13.8 miles of public fishing-rights easements are available along Cattaraugus Creek.

Beaver Meadow in North Java, New York, is a 324-acre nature preserve. There you will find a beaver meadow with associated ponds, glacial kettle lakes, wetlands with a boardwalk, wooded uplands, and meadows. A bird-of-prey observation point, an arboretum, and eight miles of marked and maintained trails round out the various nature experiences.

Railroads, Museums, and Regional History

An unusual attraction is the Arcade and Attica Railroad. It offers the only regularly scheduled excursion rides with a steam locomotive in the state of New York and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the Picnic and Cycle Tour, the railroad transports bicycles from Arcade Depot to the historic Curriers station.

The William Pryor Letchworth Museum tells the history of Letchworth State Park from prehistoric times to the modern era. Its personal collections include, among other things, artifacts from Indigenous peoples and the pioneer era, as well as materials from the Civilian Conservation Corps. In Attica, the museum of the Attica Historical Society is dedicated to a diverse collection of objects from the area around the town, covering more than a century. In 1951, the Stevens family donated the original parlor in the home of Judge Alden Stevens, as well as the property for an addition to the Attica Historical Society that was intended to be used as a museum.

The Wyoming County Barn Quilt Trail, with more than 80 barn quilts throughout Wyoming County, offers additional cultural impressions. Regional history also includes a cabin that belonged to Mary Jemison, the “White Woman of the Genesee.” It was built in 1800 and originally stood at the Gardeau Flats along the Genesee River. Farms throughout Wyoming County offer locally produced food and products directly from the farm.
