Church and Schoolhouse Museum

Claryville Reformed Church lies between two mountains on the border of the Catskill Preserve. Its setting gives the church a clear connection to the landscape, while its history tells the story of the local community: it was founded in 1849 and has played an important role in community life for more than 170 years. This brings together a tangible connection to the landscape and a long local history.

Next to the church’s community hall stands the one-room schoolhouse museum. It has been preserved exactly as it was when it closed in 1956. This connection to a specific point in time sets the schoolhouse museum apart from a general account of school history: the focus is on a single schoolhouse in its preserved condition at the time of its closure. Art at the Claryville Art Center

The Claryville Art Center is a two-story art gallery converted from a barn. The building is large enough to host parties and events. Its former use as a barn and its current function as a gallery give the place a tangible architectural history; at the same time, its described uses extend beyond exhibiting art.

The Art Center’s permanent collection includes works by Russian-born American contemporary artist Alexander Kaletski, including the retrospective “Forty Years in America.” Various exhibitions featuring artwork and creations by local artists and artists from the Anna Zorina Gallery are also held throughout the year. A permanent collection and additional exhibitions are presented side by side. If you want to explore Kaletski’s work in particular, the permanent collection is the right focus; if you are interested in a broader range, exhibitions by other artists are also part of the Art Center’s offerings.

Opening Hours for Planning a Day Out

The Russian Mule Brewery offers a specific reference point for planning your day. It is open Thursdays and Fridays from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 12 to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 12 to 6 p.m. The kitchen closes one hour before closing time each day. So if you are planning a visit, take the kitchen hours into account as well as the opening hours: the kitchen closes before the Brewery. The hours vary by day of the week, so a visit on Thursday or Friday differs from one on Saturday or Sunday.
