Garden City
Accommodation in Garden City
Garden City offers a variety of reasons to visit: a sanctuary with diverse landscape features, a museum in a Victorian building, and several venues featuring exhibitions, theater and art. If you’re traveling with children, the Long Island Children's Museum offers interactive exhibits and daily activities. When choosing a vacation rental, you can consider which of these sides of the town you want to shape your stay.
Experience Green Spaces and Nature
The Garden City Bird Sanctuary is a 9-acre sanctuary. Its landscape features include wooded areas, trails, open fields, meadows, gardens and a fishpond. The grounds therefore encompass not just a single green space, but a variety of natural and landscaped areas. If you like to make nature a focus of your vacation, this mix gives you a specific reason to consider including the sanctuary in your plans.
The sanctuary manages protected green spaces for environmental stewardship, research, education and community programs. These activities add an educational and community perspective to its landscape. When planning your trip, you can combine an interest in nature with the question of whether you’d also like to include cultural attractions or museums in your stay.
Buildings, Stages and Cultural History
The Garden City Society Museum is housed in an original Victorian building from 1872, dating from the A. T. Stewart era. The museum visit is thus set in a historic building, while the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, with its event spaces, offers a different cultural focus.
The Adelphi University Performing Arts Center has five venues: a concert hall, a recital hall, a theater, a dance theater and a black box theater. The center also houses the departments of theater, music and dance, as well as extensive rehearsal spaces and concert halls. The different types of spaces give an impression of the breadth of performing arts represented there. If you’d like to include culture in your trip, you’ll find a range of formats here, from concerts and recitals to theater and dance; this does not imply that any specific performances are taking place.
Museums for Different Interests
The Long Island Children's Museum features 14 interactive exhibits, along with live theater, art spaces and daily activities. For families with children, this is a very different kind of museum visit from exploring historic firefighting equipment or aviation and spaceflight. The mix of exhibits, theater and art offers several topics to consider when planning a trip together, without limiting your visit to a single activity.
The Nassau County Firefighters Museum traces the development of firefighting equipment, protective clothing and tools in its exhibits. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a theater and a planetarium, as well as eight exhibit galleries featuring 70 air and space vehicles. These present two clearly distinct museum themes: the development of firefighting technology and aviation and spaceflight. If you’re interested in technical or historical topics, you can weigh these options when choosing your outings.
Opening Hours and Getting Around
The Nassau County Firefighters Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is also open on Mondays that fall on holidays and during school vacations. These hours can help you plan a specific day for your visit. The Cathedral of the Incarnation has its own seasonal schedule: from September through the end of May, it is generally open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., as well as on Sundays.
The Cathedral of the Incarnation is just a few short blocks from the Garden City station on the Long Island Rail Road’s Hempstead Line. If you’d like to visit the cathedral, this rail connection is a useful landmark for getting to that specific destination. When choosing your travel dates, also take the seasonal opening hours mentioned above into account. The other museums and cultural venues offer different focuses, so you can choose outings to suit the interests of your travel group.
