Alden: Discover Local History and Nature

Alden can be explored through two distinct themes: the town’s history and outdoor experiences. The Alden Heritage Center tells the story of how Alden residents lived, worked, and spent their free time. Those who prefer spending time in nature will find a year-round trail with a variety of uses at the Joe Panza Nature Trail. Local History at the Alden Heritage Center

The Alden Historical Society was founded in 1965 to preserve, interpret, and promote the history of the Town of Alden and its people. The Alden Heritage Center brings this mission to life: visitors can learn how people in Alden lived, worked, and spent their free time. Photos and artifacts related to the Black Water Mineral Baths add to the picture of the town’s history. They date from 1904 to 1965.

The first Black Water bathhouse officially opened on November 21, 1904. Its opening led to the expansion and establishment of many other businesses and activities in the Village and the Town of Alden. The baths’ history also tells the story of changes in local business and community life. Those interested in how a place has developed will find a range of starting points at the Heritage Center, from residents’ everyday lives to a bathhouse whose opening was linked to further activity in Alden.

Another historic building is the Henskee Road Schoolhouse. It was built in the 1850s and later moved to Alden Town Park. The schoolhouse is open during special Alden community events and by appointment. From September through June, the Alden Historical Society also holds programs on historical topics at the Alden Community Center at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month. Nature and Outdoor Activities

The Joe Panza Nature Trail winds through about 35 acres in the northern part of Alden Town Park. You can use the trail year-round for nature observation, hiking, picnicking, birdwatching, and cross-country skiing. The options range from quiet moments in nature to outdoor exercise. Horses and motorized vehicles are prohibited on the trail. If you’re traveling with children, you can decide together whether you’d rather visit Alden for nature observation, a picnic, or a more active time outdoors.

Alden currently has two town parks. Their facilities include soccer fields, baseball and softball fields, and concession stands. The Alden Recreation Department offers year-round recreation programs for youth, adults, and seniors. It uses Alden Town Parks, the Alden Community/Senior Center, Town Hall, and facilities at Alden Central School. These places and programs offer different themes to consider when planning your trip: sports and recreation, nature experiences, or insights into the town’s history.

The Town of Alden also runs a six-week summer program for youth. Activities include arts and crafts, outdoor games, tennis, dance, drama or theater, and swimming. For families with different interests, the historical topics and outdoor activities offer a variety of ways to plan their stay.
