Basking Ridge: History, Nature, and Special Experiences
Accommodation in Basking Ridge
Basking Ridge combines impressive evidence of American history with nature experiences in Lord Stirling Park. Those who want to plan a trip featuring culture, hiking trails, and special activities will find various options here for organizing their days. When choosing your vacation rental, you can therefore consider whether historic sites, trails through nature, or guided horseback rides should be the focus of your stay.
Experience History at Historic Sites
The Lord Stirling Manor Archaeological Site is part of Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge. During the American Revolution, it was the estate of General William Alexander, known as Lord Stirling, and his family. The site was added to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. A historic marker from the State of New Jersey also commemorates the capture of General Charles Lee by the British at Widow White's Tavern on December 13, 1776.
The Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church also offers a tangible insight into the area's architectural history. The church was built in the Greek Revival style in 1839; its exterior has undergone only minor changes since it was constructed. The Kennedy-Martin-Stelle Farmstead features the farmhouse, carriage house, and English barn as significant early examples of English and modified Dutch timber-frame construction. Through its buildings, lectures, exhibitions, and educational programs, the farmstead presents local, state, and agricultural history, as well as the history of the American Revolutionary War.
Hiking Trails, Natural History, and Horseback Rides
For active days, the Environmental Education Center in Lord Stirling Park offers about nine miles of hiking trails. Programs led by naturalists and natural history exhibits supplement the trail network with observations and explanations about nature. Groups wishing to visit the trails on a self-guided basis must make a reservation. This information is particularly important if you are planning your stay with several people.
In March 2024, a connector trail was established in Lord Stirling Park between the Environmental Education Center's hiking trails and the Stable's bridle paths. The Stable offers guided Western-style horseback rides for riders of all experience levels, led by an experienced trail guide. The rides take place exclusively at a walk. This allows you to align your travel planning clearly with your preferred activities: you can plan a nature-focused day, a hike, or a guided horseback ride without combining these offerings into a single experience.
