Ocean City combines eight miles of beach with a year-round boardwalk, waterfront nature, and opportunities to explore local history. This makes the town appealing for different kinds of vacations: you can focus your plans on beach days, leisure activities, culture, or nature experiences. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, it helps to first consider which of these sides will shape your stay.

Beach and Boardwalk: Different Vacation Days in the Same Place

Ocean City’s eight miles of beaches are a destination for families, solo travelers, surfers, anglers, walkers, and runners. That means there’s a range of options, from getting active by the water to enjoying a quiet stroll along the coast. As you plan, consider which of these activities matter for your trip and how much time you’d like to spend at the beach.

The Ocean City Boardwalk is also open to visitors year-round, though the opening hours of individual shops and businesses vary by season. Attractions include classic and thrilling rides, water parks, movie theaters, arcades, and mini golf. There are several leisure options to choose from, so not every vacation day has to look the same. Ocean City also offers visitors with limited mobility a beach-accessible wheelchair service, with chairs known as Surf Chairs. The program runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

If you’d like to ride a bike on the Boardwalk, check the seasonal schedule: In 2026, biking was generally allowed all day during the off-season; from June 19 through September 7, it was restricted to 5:00 a.m. to noon. Before riding, check the official exceptions and the schedule in effect for your trip.

The Bay and Nature as an Alternative to a Beach Day

The Bayside Center features environmental and cultural exhibits about Ocean City’s waterfront along Great Egg Harbor Bay. Visitors can enjoy views of the bay, observe wildlife, and take part in water recreation. The Center is open to visitors daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., from the last Saturday in June through Labor Day. If this seasonal offering fits your plans, check the current opening hours before your visit.

At the southern tip of Ocean City lies Corson’s Inlet State Park, with wild dunes, a lagoon, and beach access. These natural areas complement the beach and boardwalk experiences with another side of the town. The Crook Horn Creek Nature Trail is located at 51st Street and Bay Avenue. On the trail, you can hike, bike, fish, and crab. These activities offer specific ideas if you enjoy spending your vacation days outdoors.

Explore Local History

The exhibits at the Ocean City Historical Museum trace the town’s history, from Indigenous peoples’ use of its coastline for hunting to the town’s founding and development, and its present as a resort. The Sindia exhibit focuses on one chapter of this history. It features scale models, photographs, and artifacts from the four-masted ship Sindia, which ran aground near Ocean City in 1901.

The museum also offers self-guided walks highlighting local landmarks and stories from the community. You can explore local history both through the exhibits and on your own during a walk. Another event with a history of its own is the Ocean City Masters Swim, an open-water swimming event that has been held since 1979.

Find a Vacation Rental That Fits Your Plans

When choosing a vacation rental in Ocean City, start with the kind of days you want to spend. If you want the beach to be the focus, the range of beach activities offers a good starting point for planning. If you prefer leisure activities, the Boardwalk offers a different selection; the museum, Bayside Center, park, and trail each offer a distinct focus on history or nature. Think about which experiences interest you most, and guide your search for a place to stay by that vacation priority. This makes choosing a destination more specific, without turning beach, culture, and nature into a single vacation itinerary.
