Rye brings together coastal views, nature experiences and glimpses of local history. Activities range from swimming and saltwater fishing to trails through mixed forest and marshland. Historical traces are part of the picture, too: you can find them in a state park and in the history of Seavey Acres. When planning your trip, it’s worth first considering which of these aspects interests you most.

The Coast and Activities on the Water

Odiorne Point State Park offers sweeping views of the ocean and rocky coastline. An extensive network of trails winds through dense vegetation; trails may close temporarily, so it’s a good idea to check the latest park notices before your visit. The park also preserves evidence of its military history for visitors to discover. This makes it a place that combines a striking coastal view with a historical theme.

At Rye Harbor State Park, popular activities include saltwater fishing and picnicking in the sea breeze. From there, views stretch across the Atlantic to the Isles of Shoals and over Rye Harbor. If you’re looking for both a coastal view and a specific activity on the water during your stay, you’ll find both here as part of the park’s offerings.

At Wallis Sands State Beach, you can swim right by the sea. Conditions and lifeguard coverage vary. The beach also offers views of the Isles of Shoals. A shop sells a variety of goods as well as food and drinks; check locally to see if it’s currently open.

Wallis Sands State Park has a large bathhouse with outdoor rinse stations. Since amenities can change, it’s best to check their current status before your visit.

Forest Trails and Protected Nature

Marden Woods is a 25.4-acre area managed by the Rye Conservation Commission for conservation and recreation. A 0.6-mile loop trail passes through mixed forest of pines and deciduous trees. Along the way, sweeping views open up over the surrounding marshland and coast. The combination of forest, open marshland and coastal views makes this trail a different way to experience Rye than spending a day at the beach.

Seavey Acres also offers a hike, 1.3 miles long. Check with the Conservation Commission for current access conditions. The property is home to large, seasonal vernal pools that provide habitat for plants and animals. Berry Brook rises in Dover, New Hampshire, flows through Seavey Acres and continues on to the sea. At 0.6 miles, the loop trail at Marden Woods is shorter than the 1.3-mile hike at Seavey Acres—a specific difference to consider when comparing trail lengths for your outing.

Local History and Discoveries

The history of Seavey Acres dates back to the late 1600s, when the land belonged to the Seavey family. In the early 18th century, it was sold to Joshua Rand when he married Ruth Seavey; they had nine children. Their first child, Captain Daniel Rand, was born in 1777. He married Dorothy Seavey in 1801 and continued to live there. This family history adds another dimension to the nature area, beyond its trails and habitats.

The Rye Town Museum displays textiles. It also has a library with books about Rye, as well as materials for researchers and genealogists. Those interested in local history can explore collections and sources about Rye here, in addition to historical traces in the outdoors.

The Seacoast Science Center offers educational programs at Odiorne Point State Park on behalf of New Hampshire State Parks. Check the Center’s latest information on programs and access before visiting. Another way to explore Rye is the Rye Historical Society’s app for the “Rye Beach Block” walking tour. It follows Sea Road, South Road, Central Road and Red Mill Lane; confirm the app is available before setting out.

When choosing a vacation rental in Rye, you can base your decision on the focus of your trip: coastal views and swimming, trails through forest and marshland, or discoveries about local history. The places mentioned offer a range of themes and trail lengths. Consider which experiences matter to you, and choose your accommodation to match your travel interests.
