New England combines an Atlantic coastline, mountain landscapes, extensive hiking trails and places with a distinctive history. For planning your trip, it is therefore worth first deciding on your preferred focus: nature experiences around Acadia and Cape Cod, longer hiking routes or cultural discoveries in Boston, Mystic and the historic open-air museums. It makes the most sense to choose a holiday apartment or holiday home in the area where you plan to spend most of your time enjoying the experiences you have planned.

Landscapes and trails between the coast and the mountains

Acadia National Park covers just under 50,000 acres along Maine’s Atlantic coast. This makes it one of the region’s notable natural destinations for travelers who want to combine coastal landscapes with excursions into nature. The New England National Scenic Trail is even more focused on hiking: the 215-mile route runs through Connecticut and Massachusetts, passing through expansive vistas, agricultural land, unbroken forests and broad river valleys.

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail offers a broader long-distance hiking perspective. This public footpath extends for more than 2,100 miles along the ridges of the Appalachian Mountains between Maine and Georgia. In Maine, Katahdin marks the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail in Baxter State Park. These different scales can help with your travel decision: you can explore individual landscapes or base your planning around a larger hiking project.

Cape Cod also reveals another side of New England. The landscape of Cape Cod National Seashore includes forty miles of sandy beaches, marshland, ponds and higher-lying areas of land. For planning your days, you can choose from eleven hiking trails; the Province Lands Bike Trail is the longest bicycle trail in Cape Cod National Seashore. In Franconia Notch State Park, meanwhile, a mountain pass defines the surroundings. The park road stretches from Flume Gorge to Echo Lake, where kayak and pedal boat rentals are available.

Experience history and maritime culture

Those who want to get to know the region’s cultural character will find an important focal point in Boston. Boston National Historical Park is connected with the colonial struggle for independence as well as the nation’s emergence and development. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile marked route through Downtown Boston, the North End and Charlestown. It therefore offers a clearly defined way to include various historic parts of the city in your plans.

At Mystic Seaport Museum, a reconstructed New England coastal village is the centerpiece. It is also home to the Charles W. Morgan, the oldest surviving commercial vessel in America. Traditional shipbuilding techniques are preserved at the Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard, while watercraft are restored and maintained. These places are particularly well suited to a trip in which maritime history and craft traditions play just as important a role as the landscapes.

Old Sturbridge Village presents a rural New England town from the early 19th century. The Museum Education Center has four working hearths and a woodshop studio for hands-on workshops. At the Historic Patuxet Homesite, you can also learn about the Indigenous peoples who have lived there for more than 12,000 years. The Breakers offers another historical perspective, with an audio tour that conveys personal accounts of life in the house.

Choose the right region for your accommodation

The diversity of destinations is a reason to choose your accommodation not only by the name New England, but according to the itinerary you want. For a nature-focused trip, Acadia, Cape Cod or Franconia Notch can be the main focus; for culture and history, Boston, Mystic and Old Sturbridge Village offer important points of reference. Those who want to combine several interests should take the distances between their planned areas and the number of changes of location into account when making their personal plans, without turning every region into one single combined excursion route.

If Acadia National Park is part of your trip, you can consider Hancock County Airport for your arrival, as it is located ten miles from the park. Bangor International Airport is about an hour from Acadia National Park. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, the decisive factor is then which landscape or cultural area accounts for the largest part of your trip.
