Wayne County combines historical insights, trails through diverse landscapes and events with a strong local character. Those planning a trip can choose between culture, nature and seasonal experiences, and select the right vacation rental or holiday home based on which themes they want to place at the center of their visit.

Culture and History in Wayne

A good starting point for culture-focused days is the Wayne County Museum in the Rollie-Ley House, which was built in the 1890s. The museum preserves original woodwork and carvings, as well as historically interesting items from around the turn of the century. From May to September, it is open on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.; school and private tours can be arranged by appointment.

The Wayne County Courthouse was built in 1899 in the style of a Norman chateau. The Wayne Commercial Historic District comprises 68 buildings in Wayne's central business district. The district is listed in the National Register of Historic Places; its buildings are associated with the primary uses of agriculture, transportation and commerce. In addition, the catalog for the Wayne Sculpture Walk lists 11 sculptures along Main Street and Pearl Street between 1st Street and 5th Street.

Other cultural stops include Blue Cat Gallery & Studio, which presents two-month exhibitions by local, regional and national artists, as well as workshops and classes in the visual arts. The Majestic Theatre opened on December 10, 2010, as a nonprofit organization with a free movie afternoon for everyone.

Planetarium, Arboretum and Trails

The Fred G. Dale Planetarium is located on the Wayne State College campus in the Carhart Science Building at the south entrance. Regular shows for the general public are offered there; the planetarium can display 500 million stars. On the same campus, the arboretum encompasses the entire grounds and serves as a living museum for trees and plants of the region. It is also an affiliated site of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum.

For active days, Wayne offers several documented trail options. The City of Wayne and the Nebraska Department of Transportation jointly developed and built the Wayne walking trail. The first phase is known as the Will Wiseman Trail and was built in 2003. The Leila Maynard Trail offers around 6 miles of trail in Wayne and was completed in fall 2020. These different trail histories provide a concrete framework for planning your day without requiring you to experience everything in the same way.

Prairie Park has a four-acre lake stocked for recreational fishing with more than 3,000 largemouth bass and sunfish. A kayak ramp provides access to the lake. In Hoskins, Riverside Memorial Park is located along Spring Branch Creek; it has a picnic area and plenty of space for playing.

Festivals, Markets and Local Traditions

The Wayne Chicken Show takes place annually on the second Saturday in July. The program includes a parade, chicken-related competitions, games, dancing and entertainment. Its history began in 1981 with an art exhibition organized by the Wayne Regional Arts Council. The Wayne County Fair gives young people in the 4-H program the opportunity to present project work completed over the course of the year. Possible exhibits include model rockets, baked goods and sheep, among other things.

Old Settlers Day is an annual event held in Winside in June around Father's Day, dating back to 1915. From June to October, the Wayne Farmers Market is also held on the west lawn of the Wayne County Courthouse. Fresh produce, baked goods and cut flowers are offered there. Bressler-Fest is held annually in Bressler Park as a concert series featuring local and regional bands of various styles and backgrounds. In late September, Cars-N-Carroll in Carroll, Nebraska, features classic and restored vehicles, food trucks and activities.

Choosing Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests

When searching for a vacation rental in Wayne County, you can first determine your preferred focus: museums, historic architecture and art favor a culture-oriented itinerary, while the planetarium, arboretum, trails and Prairie Park open up other ideas for your days. Seasonal events such as the Wayne Chicken Show, the Farmers Market or Bressler-Fest also give the trip a specific timeframe. This allows you to choose your accommodation based on the experiences you actually want to discover.

As a destination in its own right, Wayne deserves special attention. Other destinations to consider are Saunders County, Douglas, Cass County, Sherman County, Scotts Bluff County, Thayer County and Deuel County.
