Nebraska City brings together traces of emigrant history with gardens, woodland paths, and special insights into natural and cultural history. You can choose different focuses for your trip: historical museums and homes, outdoor exploration, or a visit to Kimmel Orchard. This way, you can choose a vacation rental based on the experiences that interest you most—without letting a single excursion itinerary dictate your stay.

Trail History and Historic Homes

The Old Freighters Museum is located in the original main office of Russell, Majors & Waddell. It presents the company’s legacy and the history of emigration along the Oregon, California, and Mormon Pioneer Trails. As a historic site, it is located on the California National Historic Trail and the Pony Express National Historic Trail. Those interested in the history of westward emigration will find a different perspective on the past here than in a historic house museum.

The Taylor-Wessel-Bickel-Nelson House is a museum in a brick house built in 1857. Exhibits at the Nelson House show how Nebraska City changed and developed over time through the stories of the families who lived there. The Nelson House is open annually from late April through October; tours are available by prior appointment. Plan your visit during this period if you want to see the exhibits.

Wildwood House tells another story of a historic home: the building, constructed in 1869, has ten rooms and is designed in the Gothic Revival style. Tours are led by docents dressed in Victorian clothing. The architecture and tour offer a different focus from the family histories at the Nelson House. Meanwhile, the Nebraska City Museum of Firefighting and Education Center focuses on the history of Nebraska’s oldest fire department.

Arbor Day Farm: Trees, Trails, and Treehouses

Arbor Day Farm spans 260 acres in Nebraska City and combines natural beauty with opportunities for outdoor exploration. It is considered the birthplace of Arbor Day. That history is also present at Arbor Lodge State Historical Park: the idea for the first Arbor Day originated there in 1872. The park includes an arboretum, an Italian terrace garden, a log cabin, a carriage house, and walking paths. If you enjoy combining paths with different areas of a park, you can make these places a focus of your excursion.

Tree Adventure’s Treetop Village® offers a special way to stay above the ground. It includes 11 treehouses spread across 3 acres, connected by bridges and net-enclosed walkways. For families who enjoy discovering unusual structures on an outing, this is a concrete alternative to the city’s historic homes and museums.

Along the Missouri River and at Kimmel Orchard

The Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center is located on a 79-acre wooded overlook above the Missouri River. Its exhibits focus on the flora, fauna, and scientific discoveries recorded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Trails at the center allow visitors to follow in Lewis and Clark’s footsteps. Here, landscape and expedition history come together in one place; the trails offer a different way to explore than the museum exhibits.

Kimmel Orchard also offers several reasons to visit: visitors can pick fresh fruit right at the farm. The Apple Barn offers wine tastings featuring fruit wines, as well as red and white wines. If you would like to include fruit and wine in your trip alongside history and nature, these offerings complement the cultural attractions with a culinary focus.

A Trip to the Surrounding Area

Mayhew Cabin is located near Nebraska City. Visitors can walk through the furnished cabin and its tunnel. Mayhew Cabin was used as part of the Underground Railroad. In 2003, Mayhew Cabin with John Brown’s Cave Museum became the first site in Nebraska to be recognized by the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom. This story adds another chapter of America’s past to the region’s history.
