Different interests can shape your travel plans in Lake County: Flathead Lake, nature watching or cultural history. The landscape and the featured experiences offer a variety of ways to explore, from a vast body of water to historical collections.

Flathead Lake and its protected areas

By surface area, Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater body in the western United States. Flathead Lake State Park comprises five mainland units that surround the lake and extend along 160 miles of shoreline. Rather than forming a single park area, the state park is spread across several units around the lake.

Wild Horse Island is the largest island in Flathead Lake; the state park there covers 2,160 acres. These two figures convey the scale of the protected area without reducing the island to a single experience. The Big Arm unit of Flathead Lake State Park is also located on the lake, 15 miles north of Polson. Activities there include camping, hiking, swimming, fishing and boating; an archery range is also available.

Experience nature and plan your time

The CSKT Bison Range combines conservation with a direct glimpse of wildlife: the historic refuge is home to approximately 350 bison. Visitors can explore on self-guided drives along two scenic routes, which form a 19-mile loop that takes two hours. The stated duration helps you set aside this drive as a block of time. There are also four hiking trails, including the Bitterroot Trail and the High Point Trail; walking is permitted only in designated areas.

The two National Wildlife Refuges also differ in character. Pablo National Wildlife Refuge lies in the center of a glacial moraine, with a high density of small wetlands and upland grasslands. Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge is open daily during daylight hours, with seasonal access restrictions. If you plan to visit, check the seasonal notices in advance.

History and collections

Fort Connah offers a glimpse into the fur-trading era: visitors can explore historic buildings and learn about the lives of traders and Indigenous peoples. Neil McArthur founded the fort in 1846; Angus McDonald completed it later. It served the Hudson’s Bay Company until 1871. Educational programs also explore the history of the fur trade. The building, its origins and its use offer several perspectives on the same historic site.

The Ninepipes Museum of Early Montana displays artifacts, Indigenous beadwork, Western art and photographs. Life-size dioramas depict the Flathead Indian Reservation and early Montana. The museum also features a short nature trail on maintained grounds. History and nature are distinct themes to explore here, and a visit is not limited to a single collection within the museum.

The Miracle of America Museum contains more than 600,000 artifacts and a pioneer village. The village includes an original log cabin with a sod roof, a general store, a school and a firehouse, as well as workshops for a blacksmith, barber, tailor, carpenter and saddler. The many specific buildings and trades bring everyday life in the past to life, while the extensive collection broadens the view beyond any one subject.

St. Ignatius Mission was built in the early 1890s. Its walls and ceilings feature 58 original paintings by Brother Joseph Carignano. The adjacent museum displays mission-related and Indigenous artifacts. Those interested in architectural history will find an artistic and museum perspective here alongside the building itself. Fort Connah and the mission offer a different emphasis from the collections: they reveal history through specific places and their use.
