Gallatin offers a variety of options for a trip: in Big Sky, possibilities range from year-round trails to mountain biking and Nordic routes; museums focus on regional history and technology. When looking for the right vacation rental, you can focus on the specific destinations and then decide which experiences you want to shape your stay.

Trails and Waterfalls in Big Sky

The Big Sky Community Organization maintains a public trail network spanning 50 miles that can be used year-round. The trails connect Town Center, Meadow Village, Gallatin Canyon, and Lone Mountain. This means the network includes a range of locations and routes, though not every trail has the same length or rating.

For a direct comparison: the Ousel Falls Trail is 1.6 miles long and family-friendly. It crosses the South Fork of the West Fork of the Gallatin River and then leads to a 100-foot waterfall. The Black Diamond Trail in Big Sky Community Park is also 1.6 miles long; it is rated moderate and forms a loop. The same distance, but different ratings and routes, make these two trails clearly distinct options.

The Crail Trail is an easy, 2.6-mile loop through the historic meadow landscapes of Big Sky’s Meadow Village. The Historic Crail Ranch Museum, housed in preserved log cabins, is located along the trail. It focuses on the history of ranching and agriculture in the Big Sky region. This makes it possible to pair a trail with a specific historical focus.

Hummocks offers another trail length: this 3-mile loop is within sight of Big Sky’s town center and comprises three loop-shaped circuits. The stated distances and descriptions are useful points of comparison when planning a trip, but they do not indicate how long a hike will take.

Mountain Biking and Cross-Country Skiing

Kircliff is a glass observatory at an elevation of 11,166 feet, accessible by gondola and tram. Big Sky Resort offers lift-served and cross-country trails for mountain biking. The total offering includes more than 50 miles of mountain bike trails, including lift-served mountain biking; bike rentals and lessons are also available.

For cross-country skiing and Nordic skiing, there are more than 80 groomed kilometers at Lone Mountain Ranch and Big Sky Nordic Center & Golf Course. These routes complement the hiking and mountain biking trails with a dedicated focus on winter sports.

Museums and Regional History

The Gallatin History Museum features exhibits about the history of different people who have lived in southwest Montana. Permanent exhibits include the Big Horn Gun and a life-size pioneer cabin. The topics at the Museum of the Rockies range from geology and dinosaur nesting colonies to Native American and Montana history.

The American Computer & Robotics Museum spans a broad period of time: its exhibits cover more than 4,000 years of human history, from cuneiform tablets to the first personal computers. Other topics include artificial intelligence, quantum computing, the moon landing, and the breaking of the Enigma code. This gives the museum a different focus from the regional history collections.

In West Yellowstone, the Museum of the Yellowstone is located in the historic Union Pacific Depot. It covers local history and the history of visiting and traveling to Yellowstone National Park. Its offerings include exhibits about stagecoach and railroad companies, artifacts, educational programs and films, as well as guided tours of the historic district.

More Destinations and Practical Information

The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is an AZA-accredited nonprofit wildlife park and educational facility. The animals there cannot survive in the wild and serve as ambassadors for their wild counterparts. The Gallatin County Fairgrounds is a versatile public facility that operates year-round; historically, summer and winter fairs were held there.

Gallatin County Regional Park is open from sunrise to sunset. The beach and boat launch are closed from October 15 to May 15. If you plan to visit these areas, take this period into account when choosing your visit date.

When looking for a vacation rental, it is worth weighing your preferred destinations: trails in Big Sky, cross-country skiing, or museum visits each offer a different focus. This can help you choose accommodation based on the places that matter most to your stay.
