At St. Francois State Park, three hiking trails wind through the wooded hills and clearings of the Coonville Creek Wild Area. Dolomite cliffs offer views over the Big River; the park also provides easy river access for canoeing and rafting. Hiking and time on the water offer different ways to shape your travel plans. Trail conditions can change seasonally, and water conditions may also vary.

Trails, Water, and Terrain

St. Joe State Park offers a different focus: in its off-road vehicle area, trails run through wooded areas and sand flats. Check permits and operating conditions before driving. Two of the park’s four clear lakes have swimming beaches, along with changing rooms and restrooms; beach operations are seasonal. If you plan to visit, consider both driving conditions and the beach season.

The Stanley M. Overall Bikeway Trail System has a 7.75-mile main route. The Downtown Loop passes through Historic Downtown Farmington and reaches Long Park. This provides two different points of reference: the length of the main route and the specific path of the loop. At Dr. Crouch Nature Sanctuary, 15 acres include eleven educational stations and trails. The stations add a clear educational focus to the nature experience.

Water attractions also differ in character. Farmington Water Park includes the River’s Edge Splash Pad, a lazy river, slides, a play area, and a large swimming pool; it operates seasonally. Nearby, Gruner Ford Access is open to the public daily from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. This gives you a choice between a seasonal water park with several areas and an access point with stated daily hours.

Local History

The St. Francois County Jail Museum is located on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. St. Francois County Jail itself was built in 1870 and operated continuously as a jail for more than 125 years. This distinction matters for historical context: the year refers to the jail, not the museum.

Bonne Terre Mine is an hour south of St. Louis on Route 67. As of August 31, 2026, it was closed; check its status again before your trip.

Plan a Stay That Suits You

When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: nature trails and the river, driving and swimming opportunities, or historic sites each lead to different day plans. Also time your trip around the seasonal operation of the beaches and water park. The closure notice for Bonne Terre Mine is explicitly dated August 31, 2026.
