Warrensburg combines urban history, museums, parks and active experiences into a diverse destination in Missouri. Those looking for a vacation rental or holiday home for their stay can enjoy their time here in many different ways: with historical discoveries, museum visits, walks, water activities, fishing or a round of golf.

Water, Parks and Recreation

Warrensburg has nine parks covering a total area of more than 400 acres. At Culp Park, a three-mile walking trail leads through a natural area and along a lake with a boat dock. People have been visiting Pertle Springs for recreation since 1886; fishing is permitted in all of Pertle Springs’ bodies of water. This makes it possible to combine a peaceful stay by the water with a specific recreational experience.

For longer active days, the Spirit Trail is a good option. The shared walking and cycling trail extends for approximately 11 miles between Warrensburg and Knob Noster. Take the approximate length into account when planning your day and choose a hiking or cycling tour depending on your interests. The Mules National Golf Club is also part of the city’s recreational offerings: The public course has 18 holes.

Water activities are available at several locations. The Nassif Aquatic Center has two water slides, a diving board, a large swimming area, a zero-entry splash area and a water playground for children, cabanas, a snack stand and a lazy river. The Warrensburg Community Center complements this offering with an indoor pool, a swimming pool, a spa and a splash pool with a slide.

City History Around the Original Square

The self-guided Stories of Downtown tour includes 14 notable locations. Plaques and QR codes lead to detailed histories of the buildings and give the tour a clear historical focus. Warrensburg’s original town square at 302 N Main is home to the original 1838 Johnson County Courthouse, the Mary Miller Smiser Heritage Library and Museum, the Elm School one-room schoolhouse and the Culp Building.

The Johnson County Courthouse on Old Public Square features the Federal style. The Old Johnson County Courthouse has been restored to its appearance from around 1870. The 1838 courthouse was the site of the Old Drum trial; its basement is furnished as it was in 1870 during the trial. Those interested in architecture and local history can complement these sites with the Grover Street Victorian Historic District. It includes nine houses, most of which date from the Victorian era.

The history of Blind Boone Park is also part of the city’s story. The park was formerly a segregated park and is named after composer and pianist John William “Blind” Boone, who was born and raised in Warrensburg.

Museums, Exhibitions and Special Collections

The Johnson County Historical Society’s Museum Complex displays artifacts from early pioneer life, handmade local furniture, and exhibitions on letter writing, women’s fashion and housekeeping, medicine and health, music, schools and Pertle Springs. The McClure Archives and University Museum is UCM’s official archive for ethnographic, historical and textile artifacts from around the world, as well as for the history of UCM. It presents up to six exhibitions per year, along with lectures, public programs and educational offerings for schools and community groups.

The UCM Gallery of Art & Design presents between twelve and twenty visual art exhibitions per academic year featuring local, national and international artists. The Retrograde Charitable Toy and Videogame Museum offers a completely different experience with retro video games, collectibles, toys and board games. Interactive experiences with original retro hardware, toys and accessories bring the collection to life; tours are available upon request.

Market Visits and Planning the Right Vacation

From May through September, the Warrensburg Farmers’ Market takes place every Saturday in downtown Warrensburg. Vendors offer locally grown fruit and vegetables, eggs, grass-fed meat, bread, baked goods, granola, honey and handmade goods from local artisans. When looking for a vacation rental in Warrensburg, you can therefore first consider what you want your days to focus on: city history and exhibitions, water and parks, exercise on the Spirit Trail or a Saturday visit to the market.
