Architecture and History in Unity Village
A central point of interest is the Unity School of Christianity Historic District. It includes two buildings, a fountain, a balustrade and the immediately surrounding landscape. The district was designed and built between 1927 and 1930 in the tradition of the Italian Renaissance. Well-kept lawns, shrubs, semicircular paths and straight walkways are part of its characteristic surroundings.
The Unity Tower is a 165-foot-tall structure from 1929 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. The Bridge of Faith is also noteworthy: It was designed by Rickert Fillmore and dedicated by Lowell Fillmore in 1951. The Fillmore Chapel features original Art Deco frescoes hand-painted by David Ahrends. The Silent Unity Visitors Chapel has elaborate stencil paintings. The historic Unity Education Building was originally called the Silent Unity Building and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Gardens, Fountains and Quiet Discoveries
The landscaped outdoor areas are ideal for more peaceful sightseeing moments. The Silent Unity Fountain is attributed to the architects Boillot and Lauck. A large Venetian-inspired fountain complex at Unity Village covers 14,090 square feet. The rose garden was established in 1952 and contains approximately 800 roses in numerous varieties.
A special stop is the Unity Labyrinth. It has a diameter of 90 feet, is the largest paver labyrinth in the United States and is used for mindfulness. Those planning a trip with a range of interests can combine a more leisurely stop here with architecture, gardens or a hike, without limiting the site's themes to a single attraction.
Nature Trail and Active Day Planning
The Carl L. Chinnery Nature Trail is 2.5 miles long. Both ends of the nature trail have steep climbs, so you should take the route into account when planning your day. Along the way is a Natural Bridge associated with the report that Jesse James used it as a hiding place. The trail also includes a mural in a concrete tunnel beneath the railroad bridge. These details give the route its own character and make it a complement to the cultural and historical visit.
The Unity Village Golf Course adds another distinctive element: The course has nine holes and a par of 36. Its clubhouse is the Harris farmhouse, which was converted into a country home for Unity founders Charles Fillmore and Myrtle Fillmore. The Potting Shed was built in 1923 as a wellhouse over the main water well of Unity Farm, as the campus was originally called. Wellhouse No. 1 is a preserved farm building behind the golf clubhouse and was also built in 1923 over an existing farm well.
