Nature Between the Missouri River and Moreau Creek
The Scrivner Road Conservation Area covers 919 acres. It includes the nine-acre Winegar Lake and more than two miles of shoreline along South Moreau Creek. An 8.5-mile trail system along Moreau Creek provides access to most areas of the conservation area. There is also a shooting range with a shotgun facility, as well as 25-, 50- and 100-yard rifle and pistol ranges.
Church Farm covers 1,277 acres of floodplain along the Missouri River. Scour holes and seasonal oxbow lakes provide habitat for waterfowl, wading birds and shorebirds. Bald eagles also nest in some of the larger stands of trees along the Missouri River. Binder Community Lake likewise offers opportunities to observe waterfowl and shorebirds.
The Smoky Waters Conservation Area covers 1,041 acres on a peninsula formed by the confluence of the Missouri and Osage Rivers. Shore fishing is possible on both rivers. However, the easternmost part can only be reached on foot along the diversion levee or by boat from the river. You should take this special feature into account when planning your day.
Trails and Active Outings
For a tour with a clearly defined route, the Katy Spur is a good option: it connects to the Katy Trail at the North Jefferson Trailhead, runs one mile south and ends at a pavilion near the intersection of Highway 63/54 and Route W. Stringtown Bridge Access also provides public access to North Moreau Creek at Route C west of Jefferson City, Missouri.
Clark’s Hill also combines scenery and history. At the foot of the hill is an expedition campsite where the expedition camped from June 1 to 3, 1804. The trail to Clark’s Hill passes two Native American burial mounds mentioned by Clark in his diary, as well as three additional mounds discovered at this location.
Museums and Historical Insights
In Jefferson City, the Missouri State Museum presents exhibitions on Missouri’s natural and cultural history. Museum staff also lead tours of the Capitol. The Lohman Building houses an exhibition on transportation and shows the 20-minute film “Welcome to Missouri State Capital.” History Hall focuses on Missouri’s cultural history; the “Missouri Trailblazers” exhibition introduces people from Missouri through artifacts, explanatory panels and games. Jefferson Landing was a bustling commercial center on the Missouri River in the mid-19th century. The Cole County Historical Society Museum is a historic site in Jefferson City, Missouri, built in 1871 by Governor B. Gratz Brown. It displays changing exhibitions of the formal inauguration gowns worn by Missouri’s First Ladies.
