Clinton County: Discover Nature and History
Accommodation in Clinton County
Riversides, lakes, old oaks, and traces of regional history give Clinton County its many facets. You can hike outdoors, watch birds, or discover houses and churches on a historic tour. There are also special opportunities to learn about local crafts and traditions. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering which experiences matter most to you—and choosing a vacation rental accordingly.
Water, Woods, and Trails
At McGee Family Conservation Area, the northeastern corner borders the Little Platte River on both sides. Public activities there include hunting, fishing, and hiking; posted regulations apply. There is also a boat ramp to Smithville Lake on Hwy. C near the conservation area.
Ronald and Maude Hartell Conservation Area brings together seven lakes and shoreline areas along the Little Platte River, also known as Smith Fork. Amenities include fishing clinics, demonstration areas, and nature interpretation trails. For accessible visitor facilities, there are three accessible parking spaces, an accessible floating fishing dock, and two accessible restrooms. Check the condition of these facilities again before your trip.
Trice-Dedman Memorial Woods offers a different natural highlight: the oak woodland features old white oaks, boulders, and low limestone outcrops. Activities there include hiking, birdwatching, wildflower viewing, and exploring. Choose between waterways and woodland discoveries as different focuses for your stay.
History Along the Way
In Plattsburg, the free Historical Homes Walking Tour follows three loops, each about half a mile long, passing around 25 notable homes and churches. This short tour, divided into several loops, offers a different focus from a day in nature: architecture and local history come into view as you walk. Check route information before setting out.
The former route of the Jefferson Highway is also commemorated in the region: a mural in Plattsburg recalls the road, while commemorative signs in Cameron and Plattsburg mark its former route. The Riley-Carmack House adds to these historical insights. The Clinton County Historical Society acquired it in 1976 with the aim of displaying donated items. The house itself was built between 1886 and 1888 in the Eastlake style.
Deer Creek Cabin is a log cabin built in 1829, moved log by log and rebuilt near Plattsburg. Hands-on introductions offer the chance to learn historic skills such as grinding coffee beans, dipping candles, churning butter, and husking corn. The cabin is open by appointment only; arrange your visit in advance.
Experiences with Different Highlights
In Lathrop, John W. Burns Memorial Park is home to the town’s inclusive playground. The Lathrop Antique Club hosts a vintage tractor and car show, a flea market, a mule show, fireworks, and other events several times a year. Since event dates may change from year to year, check the dates for your travel period.
At Dandelion Creek Company, guests can bottle-feed a baby goat in spring by appointment. The company also makes small batches of soap from the milk of its own Alpine and Saanen goats, which are kept on the farm near Plattsburg. Arrange your visit in advance to coordinate with the seasonal schedule. The Abbey of Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles welcomes visitors to attend Mass and take a walk around the grounds. Confirm visitor arrangements and any restrictions on private areas in advance.
Choose a Vacation Rental Based on Your Travel Interests
When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to prioritize the experiences you want to shape your stay: nature trails and water, historic walks, or special events and insights into local traditions. First decide which stops matter most to you, then compare accommodation locations based on your own itinerary. This leaves room for different day plans without letting a single outing define the whole trip.
