Prairie, Loess Hills, and Exceptional Views
At Charity Lake in the Brickyard Hill Conservation Area, you can fish for bass, sunfish, and channel catfish. Brickyard Hill Loess Mound is a natural area within this conservation area. From there, you can enjoy impressive views of the Missouri River floodplain and westward as far as Nebraska. The mound is also home to plants and animals characteristic of the Great Plains in central Nebraska and Kansas.
The Tarkio Prairie Conservation Area preserves one of the few known high-quality prairies remaining in the glaciated plains of northern Missouri. Its prairie flora is particularly diverse on loess and glacial till soils. More than 100 native plant species grow in the Tarkio Prairie Natural Area. The area is available for various outdoor activities, provided they are compatible with resource management; hunting and fishing are also permitted in the Natural Area. Watson Access provides access to both rivers, while Langdon Bend Access provides access to the Missouri River. For your planning, it is therefore crucial whether you want to focus on a specific waterside access point or on a landscape with expansive viewpoints.
The Deroin Bend Conservation Area also combines nature and river history. It preserves unique wetland and fish habitats. The restoration of 3.3 miles of an old channel of the Missouri River is planned there. Deroin Bend is named after Joseph Deroin, who settled nearby in the 1840s and established the St. Deroin trading post on the riverbank.
History, Theater, and Local Life
In Rock Port, the Liberty Theatre is located on the upper floor of the Atchison County Memorial Building at 417 South Main Street. The building was erected as a World War I memorial after $50,000 had been pledged throughout the county between 1919 and 1921. The theater provides local directors and actors with a stage on which to practice their craft. For orientation in the area, the Rock Port Official Missouri Welcome Center provides tourism brochures, maps, and information about major highways.
The local character also includes the Rock Port MO Farmers Market, with locally grown produce, handmade goods, and baked products, as well as an annual all-you-can-eat fish fry hosted by the Atchison County Fair Board. You can fish at Charity Lake; the river accesses mentioned, by contrast, provide access to the rivers. The Nishnabotna Conservation Area entails a special form of access to its northern section. For a more cultural stay, you can include the Liberty Theatre, the Memorial Building, and the local market offerings.
