Prentiss County can be explored through several distinct themes: archaeological sites, historic places, fossil finds, and activities on the water. Pharr Mounds represents a history reaching far back in time, while Bay Springs Lake shows a different, water-oriented side of the region. When choosing a vacation rental in Prentiss, it helps to first consider which of these interests will shape your trip.

Archaeological Sites and Historic Places

Prentiss County is home to the Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site. The site commemorates a Confederate victory that had costly long-term consequences for the Confederacy. Pharr Mounds represents a different historical period: the Middle Woodland-period site includes eight dome-shaped mounds across 90 acres, built about 2,000 to 1,800 years ago. Today’s Chickasaw regard Pharr Mounds as sacred. Together, the battlefield and the much older mound complex represent different chapters of history.

Baldwyn also offers a concrete glimpse of historic town structures. The Baldwyn Historic District covers 36 acres in the city of Baldwyn, which is divided by the Lee County–Prentiss County boundary. Within the district, 165 properties contribute significantly to its historic character. The proposed Downtown Booneville Historic District encompasses 48 buildings along Main Street and the surrounding streets of historic downtown Booneville. The Prentiss County Courthouse was built in 1924–1925.

In Booneville is the Rails and Trails Museum, housed in the historic Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Depot, built around 1890. A culinary landmark is Weeks Diner, where Willie Weeks carries on the Slugburger tradition as a descendant of its founder, John Weeks. The museum, depot, and diner offer different connections to local history—from a railroad building to regional food culture.

Bay Springs Lake and Outdoor Activities

Piney Grove Boat Ramp lies at the edge of Prentiss County and provides direct access to Bay Springs Lake, part of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. A valid day-use pass is required to launch a boat at the ramp. Piney Grove Campground on Bay Springs Lake offers opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, and biking. Those interested in this side of the region will find a range of activities here that can shape a stay by the water.

Natural history is also on display at W.M. Browning Cretaceous Fossil Park. The large concretions in Twenty-mile Creek contain Cretaceous fossils, including shark teeth and other fossils. About 90 percent of the John Bell Williams Wildlife Management Area lies in Prentiss County, and the area also extends into Itawamba County. It is a natural area whose geographic reach extends beyond Prentiss County’s borders.

Pharr Mounds lies along the Natchez Trace Parkway. This 444-mile recreational road and scenic route passes through three states; hiking, biking, horseback riding, and camping are possible along the route. This connection places the parkway in the broader context of the archaeological site without replacing Pharr Mounds’ own distinct history.
