The place name has also changed: Thaxton was formerly called Buttermilk Springs. On July 4, 1861, a barbecue was held there, with a parade and refreshments. Earlier life in Buttermilk Springs included selling buttermilk to travelers, particularly stagecoach passengers, while their drivers watered the horses.
