Grenada County brings together expansive waterscapes, wetlands, and a remarkable musical and architectural history. Grenada Lake is Mississippi’s largest freshwater lake and lies along the Yalobusha and Skuna rivers. Those weighing nature against culture when planning their stay will find a range of themes here, from views across the lake to blues history and historic buildings.

Lake and Wetlands

At Grenada Lake, the Visitor Center, with its theater and exhibits, presents the history and natural resources of the lake. An overlook offers panoramic views of the 36,000-acre lake. It’s a good starting point for anyone who wants to make time by the water the focus of their stay; check current visitor information in advance.

The Malmaison Wildlife Management Area offers a different landscape: this 9,483-acre area lies at the boundary between the Delta and hill country in Grenada County, divided by State Highway 7. The Yalobusha River runs through it; its landscape features include oxbow lakes, cypress-tupelo swamps, wet depressions, and seasonal wetlands. The 300-acre wetland complex at Lee Tartt Nature Preserve also includes oxbow lakes, along with bottomland forest and seasonal pools. Kayaking is available there. Together, the two areas offer different ways to experience waterscapes.

Compare Trails and Activities

The nature trails also differ in length and described route. The Lost Bluff Trail is two miles long and includes steep, winding sections and steps. The Haserway Wetland Management Area Nature Trail is 1.5 miles long and runs along Toe Road behind the Grenada Dam. The Old River Run Nature Trail follows both the old and new channels of the Yalobusha River. These details help you compare different trails by length and character without presenting them as one single outing.

For another activity, the Dam Area Central Recreation Area, with a disc golf course, is located below the Grenada Dam. Along with nature trails and kayaking, there are different kinds of recreation to consider. Deciding which of these you want to shape your stay can be a useful starting point when searching for a vacation rental in Grenada County.

Blues and Historic Buildings

The blues that originated in Grenada County was an influential force in popular music for many years. Local history is also reflected in notable buildings and collections: the original Grenada Bank building is now home to the Grenada History Museum. The bank was the first in Mississippi to develop a system of branch locations. The Historical Museum/Coca-Cola Display features objects from Grenada’s early days and houses a large collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia.

Other historic sites offer different perspectives. The Illinois Central Depot is the only unaltered building that remains connected to Grenada’s railroad history. The Manager’s House at Glenwild Plantation is the only surviving residence associated with the plantation and an example of the Colonial Revival style, unusual for Grenada. Grenada’s Old Post Office also represents an architectural style that is relatively unusual there: it is an example of Georgian Revival. The Odd Fellows / Confederate Cemetery was established around 1840 and is Grenada’s oldest cemetery. Founded in 1868, Belle Flower Missionary Baptist Church served as a center for local and national organizers during the Civil Rights Movement.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

When choosing accommodations, you can first consider what you want to focus on: the lake and wetlands, trails and activities, or music and architectural history. This lets you tailor your vacation rental search to the themes that matter for your trip, rather than trying to fit every experience into a single itinerary. From Memphis, you can reach Grenada Lake by taking I-55 south to Grenada and then MS 8 east. Check current road conditions before setting out.
