Sandy beaches on Lake Superior, regional history and a trail through the forests give Ontonagon several different sides. You can focus your stay on the water, explore the region’s history or consider a longer route between Ontonagon and Rockland. Smaller places to take a break and special views are also part of the area’s appeal.

Beaches and Views on Lake Superior

Ontonagon’s beaches on Lake Superior are sandy and offer views of the lake. They are ideal for evening walks and picnics. If you like to spend time by the water during your stay, this offers a different focus than visiting the exhibits or taking a trip on the Ontonagon-Rockland Trail.

Lakeshore Park is a beach access park near Ontonagon’s main road. From there, you can enjoy views of the sunset over Ontonagon Pier. The park thus combines beach access with a specific scenic viewpoint. Since 2019, a group of volunteers has been laying ADA-compliant beach mats on Ontonagon’s beaches; they were funded by a grant from the Portage Health Foundation.

The Village of Ontonagon also has a smaller park, RICC Park, located between Anytime Fitness and the Historical Society Museum. Benches and tables provide space for picnics, small gatherings and a short break while walking along Main Street. This makes the park a different kind of place to pause from the beaches and longer trails.

Regional History at the Museum

The Ontonagon County Historical Museum is a Heritage Site of the Keweenaw National Historical Park. Its exhibits cover mining, logging, agriculture, shipping and the region’s social life. These topics offer several historical perspectives for a museum visit, ranging from work and the economy to local community life. The museum is wheelchair accessible.

Another historic destination is the Ontonagon Lighthouse. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in October 1975. If you would like to include historic places as well as nature in your travel plans, you can consider the museum and lighthouse as different points of connection with the region’s heritage.

Forest and Route Between Two Towns

The Ontonagon-Rockland Trail is 13 miles long and connects Ontonagon with Rockland. It passes through forests and offers opportunities for wildlife viewing. The stated trail length is a useful guide for planning your day; it makes the trail a different kind of outing from a short break at RICC Park or an evening walk by the lake.

When choosing a vacation rental in Ontonagon, the focus you want for your stay can help guide your decision: the beach and sunset, regional history, or forest and wildlife viewing. The experiences mentioned differ in character, without requiring any one theme to define your entire stay. In the Ontonagon Marina area, transportation is available into town for shopping and meals, and to nearby tourist attractions. The marina has 31 seasonal slips and six transient slips.
