More than 200 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline define Delta County. The county includes the cities of Escanaba, Gladstone and Rapid River. Along the coast, you’ll find opportunities for swimming, paddling and boating, while trails, historic sites and museums offer more to explore. You can shape your stay around the water, nature or local history.

Coast, Trails and Water Activities

Fayette Historic State Park lies on Big Bay de Noc on Lake Michigan, between Snail Shell Harbor and Sand Bay. The park has five miles of trails with views from 90-foot-high limestone cliffs surrounding the harbor. At the Fayette Historic Townsite, you can walk among preserved historic buildings; self-guided and guided tours are offered in summer. Check seasonal tour availability before your trip.

Kayaks and an 18-foot canoe are available for seasonal rental in the park: from June through September at the contact station, and from October through May through the park administration. The boat launch provides access to Big Bay de Noc. Check both current rental availability and launch conditions before your visit. The Track Chair can be used throughout the park, including at the historic Townsite; you can also check reservation procedures in advance.

The Days River Nature Trail offers a different kind of trail: the 0.75-mile loop winds through a diverse floodplain forest near the mouth of the Days River. Cedar groves, wetlands and river views shape the route. In winter, the Days River Trail offers several loops and a groomed trail for skating-style cross-country skiing; check trail and grooming conditions in advance. The difference between a single loop and a longer trail network can help you choose the right day’s itinerary.

O.B. Fuller Park is an 82-acre site on the banks of the Bark River and Lake Michigan. In Ludington Park, a bike path connects the coastal park and swimming beach with Aronson Island, where there is an accessible fishing pier. For boaters, Escanaba Marina offers fuel, electricity, showers, a harbormaster, bike rentals and tourist information. Marina services may change, so it’s worth checking before your trip.

Museums and Maritime History

The Delta County Historical Museum’s exhibits cover lumbering, shipping, railroads, the military, Indigenous cultures, fishing and the local economy. These topics offer a range of perspectives on the region’s history. The Sand Point Lighthouse offers a striking maritime detail: it has been fully restored and furnished, and still has a fourth-order Fresnel lens. For reference, it stands at the end of Ludington Street, opposite Escanaba Municipal Marina.

At the U.P. Military Museum, you can take self-guided tours; the collection includes artifacts from the American Civil War era and beyond. Check visiting hours before you arrive. The Webster Marble: Inventing the Outdoors Museum displays hunting knives, axes, automatic fish hooks, the Game Getter rifle and a Ford Model T, among other items. At the U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Village and Museum, offerings include an interactive learning experience and demonstrations by local artisans of traditional crafts; demonstrations may be seasonal.

Seasonal Events and Winter Activities

The Gladstone Farmers Market takes place on Mondays from June through September, offering locally grown fruits and vegetables, baked goods and handcrafted items. In summer, concerts are held weekly on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. at the Karas Memorial Band Shell in Ludington Park. The fair at the U.P. State Fairgrounds and Heritage Center takes place annually in August. Check the relevant event calendar for your travel dates, as seasonal schedules may change.

There are also specific activities for winter days: Gladstone Ski Hill offers downhill skiing, snowboarding and tubing, as well as a fun park with a halfpipe and snowmaking. Check winter operating status and conditions before your trip. The options offer distinct highlights: summer events and coastal experiences contrast with winter loops, the groomed trail and activities at the ski hill.

Choose a Vacation Rental Based on Your Travel Dates and Interests

When searching for a vacation rental, your planned travel dates can be a useful starting point. If you visit in summer, the market, concerts and tours can shape your stay; for a winter visit, trails and winter sports come into focus. Consider which experiences matter most to your stay, and choose a location based on the specific destinations in your travel plans.
