Shrewsbury Between Lakes, Trails, and History
Accommodation in Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury can be explored on different scales: from 800-acre Lake Quinsigamond to much smaller Jordan Pond, from trails through woods and wetlands to historic sites in the center. This mix gives your trip several possible focal points. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, first consider whether waterside landscapes, trails, or local history best fit your plans.
Lake Quinsigamond and Jordan Pond
Lake Quinsigamond is an 800-acre Great Pond between Shrewsbury and Worcester in Worcester County. Jordan Pond is also in Shrewsbury, but is much smaller at 21 acres. It lies south of Route 9 and east of Lake Quinsigamond. Comparing their sizes helps distinguish the two bodies of water without treating them as one shared recreation area.
Jordan Pond also has some distinctive landscape features: most of its shoreline is in protected, undeveloped areas. The pond averages 6 feet deep and reaches a maximum depth of 10 feet. Its bottom is muddy, with rock and gravel in some places. Together with a paved trail on one side and an unpaved trail on the other, this gives it a different character from the broad expanse of Lake Quinsigamond.
Trails with different surfaces and scenery
Shrewsbury’s parks offer several clearly distinct trail profiles. Dean Park has more than 1.8 miles of connected trails through wooded areas and along a pond. At Jordan Pond, there is a 1.2-mile paved trail on one side and an unpaved trail on the other. The two options therefore differ not only in length, but also in surface and scenery.
Lake Street Park combines more than 1.3 miles of paved trails with additional unpaved trails. They pass through woods, a meadow, and a wetland. Prospect Park has more than 2.3 miles of connected paved trails through wooded areas. Along the way are the remains of formal gardens on the former Whittall estate and of the former Whittall Mansion. This historic connection is part of the description of the former estate; the trails also offer a point of comparison with the open meadow and wetland landscape at Lake Street Park. Trail lengths and conditions may change; check the current situation before your visit.
Discover local history downtown and virtually
The central Shrewsbury Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 8, 1976. The district includes the Town Common and the First Congregational Church. The Artemas Ward Homestead on Main Street is another historic site in Shrewsbury and was also added to the National Register in 1976.
The General Artemas Ward House Museum offers another way to explore a historic home: it provides a virtual tour with views of various rooms and information about objects on display there. This lets you include a historical perspective in your trip planning independently of a walk through the parks described above.
Plan your stay around your interests
If you’re especially interested in the waterside landscape, the large Lake Quinsigamond and smaller Jordan Pond differ considerably in size. For trails, you can compare their surfaces and surroundings: paved sections at Jordan Pond and Prospect Park contrast with unpaved trails at Jordan Pond and Lake Street Park. For local history, the Historic District, Artemas Ward Homestead, and the museum’s virtual tour offer different points of interest.
At the Jordan Pond Recreation Area on Ridgeland Road, the town manages a basic earth ramp for cartop boats. There are parking spaces for four or five cars, as well as additional roadside parking; shore fishing is possible from the recreation area’s trail network. Restrictions may apply. If these amenities are important to your plans, check the current conditions before visiting. When looking for a vacation rental, a good first step is to decide what you want to focus on during your trip: water, trails, or history. This will help you guide your search toward the experiences in Shrewsbury that interest you.
