New Carrollton combines a vibrant community culture with a local history that reaches back to the colonial era and with several examples of public art. Those looking for a vacation rental for their trip will find a variety of points of connection here: annual events, outdoor activities, historical topics, and artworks with unusual origins.

Community, Food, and Exercise

New Carrollton Community Day takes place annually at Beckett Field. At Community Day 2025, more than 60 food and arts-and-crafts vendors were represented. For 2025, Community Day was also announced as an International Festival celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and African Heritage Month. This makes the event one of the specific cultural themes you can take into account when planning your trip.

New Carrollton has two outdoor fitness courts. One is located at Beckett Field on Legation Rd, and the other is directly behind the New Carrollton Municipal Center at 6016 Princess Garden Parkway. If you value an active break during your trip, these two locations can be included in your daily itinerary alongside the cultural experiences.

Local History Between Terrapin Thicket and the Racetrack

The area now known as New Carrollton was called Terrapin Thicket during the colonial era. The name referred to the numerous turtles in its swampy land. A later turning point was the referendum of May 2, 1966: at that time, voters approved the name change to New Carrollton.

The area's motorsport history is also part of its past. Midget and stock-car races were held at Old Lanham Raceway in New Carrollton from 1939 to 1954. This historical thread adds a topic to the local history that clearly differs from today's community events and public artworks.

Public Art with a Story of Its Own

On the plaza at the Metro Building at New Carrollton is Dawn and Dusk Resurgent, a mosaic created in 2022 from handcrafted and industrially manufactured glass and stone. The work was created from large sections of the former mosaic in the parking garage at New Carrollton Station. It is the first artwork in the Art-in-Transit collection to be created through the redesign of an existing artwork.

Another public artwork at the New Carrollton Branch Library contains translucent umbrellas. They enable numerous combinations of color and light. For visitors who want to shape their trip not only around events but also around art in public spaces, this provides two different cultural points of reference.

The Right Accommodation for Planning Your Trip

When searching for accommodation in New Carrollton, you can first decide which themes should shape your stay. Community Day and the culinary and craft offerings create a different focus than the history of Terrapin Thicket, the area's motorsport past, or the two art examples. This allows you to choose a vacation rental according to your own interests and preferred daily rhythm, without limiting the trip to just one facet of the area.
