Garrett County: History, Lakes, and Seasonal Experiences
Accommodation in Garrett County
Garrett County offers several ways to shape a trip around a theme: county history at museums and historic sites, water activities at Deep Creek Lake, and seasonal offerings in parks and at Wisp Resort. There is also a Barn Quilt Trail; Garrett County was the first county in Maryland to have one. You can decide in advance whether culture, the lake, or winter activities should be the focus of your stay.
History at Museums and Historic Sites
The Garrett County Historical Society preserves and shares the county’s history in two museums with a variety of exhibits and artifacts. The History Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and closed on holidays. Check the opening hours again before you set out.
Buildings also tell the story of the county’s past. Fort Alice was built in 1861 to protect a strategically important railroad crossing over the Youghiogheny River. The Casselman River Bridge, built in 1813, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The state park currently reports a temporary closure of the bridge area; check its status before your visit.
Agriculture and Local Creativity
The Garrett County Agriculture Fair is an annual exhibition featuring local agriculture, producers, gardeners, photographers, and other skills. The 2026 edition was the 69th. The Deep Creek Farmers Market supports local farmers, producers, artisans, and small businesses. These themes complement museums and historic buildings with a look at agriculture and local creativity.
Water Activities at Deep Creek Lake
Deep Creek Lake was created in 1925 by the Youghiogheny Hydro Electric Corporation to harness the water power of Deep Creek. Today, boating, fishing, kayaking, swimming, and other water sports are available at the lake. Deep Creek Lake State Park has a public boat launch; availability is weather-dependent. If water activities are important to your trip, you can make them a focus of your planning.
Lakes, Trails, and Winter Activities
Herrington Manor State Park covers 365 acres and features a 53-acre lake. Swimming and boating are available there, including rowboats, canoes, and pedal boats. In winter, the park offers cross-country ski trails and ski rentals; use depends on seasonal conditions and current park operations.
Comparing lake sizes gives a sense of their different scales: the lake at Herrington Manor State Park covers 53 acres, while the lake at New Germany State Park covers 13 acres. New Germany is located on the site of a once-thriving mill center in Savage River State Forest. Its trails are used for hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter, also subject to seasonal conditions.
For downhill skiing, Wisp Resort offers nearly 40 runs across a variety of terrain, as well as a tubing park, terrain park, and beginner ski area. Winter operations depend on seasonal conditions. This range of options can help you plan when to travel: lake activities and boating take center stage in some places, while hiking, cross-country skiing, or downhill skiing may shape the day elsewhere.
When looking for a vacation rental, your trip plans are a good place to start. Consider whether you want to prioritize museums and history, water activities, or seasonal offerings. This makes it easier to match your travel dates and planned destinations to your interests. If you’re traveling with family, you can also account for different preferences by planning around different priorities from the outset.
