Cecil County is located on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, halfway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. The region combines waterscapes, natural areas and historic sites to create very different holiday experiences. When searching for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Cecil, you can therefore first consider whether trips to the water, longer routes through forests and fields, or cultural history should be the focus of your stay.

Waterscapes and Nature Experiences

Elk Neck State Park is located in Cecil County on a peninsula formed by the Chesapeake Bay to the west and the Elk River to the east. The North East Beach Area has a swimming area. Those who want to experience Cecil from the water can find a public boat access point to the Elk River at the Rogues Harbor Boat Launch Facility, as well as fishing piers.

The landscape of Fair Hill also offers various opportunities for active days. The 5,656-acre Natural Resources Management Area includes fields and wooded areas. Its approximately 80-mile trail network offers opportunities for hiking, running, cycling and horseback riding. Big Elk Creek runs through the area, a stocked trout stream with catch-and-keep fishing. A distinctive landmark in the area is the Foxcatcher Farm Covered Bridge over Big Elk Creek near the Fair Hill Nature and Environmental Center.

Bohemia River State Park is managed as a Natural Resource Management Area in order to preserve and protect unique natural resources and biological diversity. The park is intended for passive recreation, including trail use and nature observation. From June through September, ranger-led paddle trips with short hiking sections are offered on Great Bohemia Creek. Important for planning: Bohemia River State Park currently has no vehicle access to the shoreline. Paddlers are directed to the existing public water access points at Route 213 and at the bridge over the Bohemia River.

Lighthouse, Museums and Regional History

Turkey Point Lighthouse stands on a 100-foot-high cliff at the confluence of the Elk River and the Northeast River in Elk Neck State Park. The Turkey Point Light Station was built in 1833 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 2, 2002. This gives the area a tangible historical connection within the waterscape.

From the 17th century until the early 20th century, Elk Landing was a transportation hub for travel between important cities in the Mid-Atlantic region. Today, Elk Landing is part of the Washington-Rochambeau Historic Trail and the Star-Spangled Banner Trail. At the Rodgers Tavern Museum, you can take self-guided tours and use interpretive panels and interactive exhibits.

The Upper Bay Museum preserves the maritime traditions, artifacts and cultural heritage of the watermen and hunters of the Upper Chesapeake Bay in a historic fish house on the riverfront. On display are scale models of traditional fishing vessels, nets, decoys, market-hunting equipment and ice-harvesting tools. Mount Harmon offers tours of the historic Mount Harmon Manor House and its outbuildings. For the Paper Chase activity, it also has a five-mile grass trail that runs along the Sassafras River.

Rivers, Canal and Practical Orientation

The five rivers of Cecil County, the Chesapeake Bay and the C&D Canal can be explored by boat or overland. The C&D Canal Museum is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. On weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, it is open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., subject to volunteer availability.

Agritourism in Cecil County includes public farm stores, wine or beer tastings, farm tours, horseback riding, pick-your-own activities and seasonal events. This allows you to add rural experiences to your travel plans without focusing your stay exclusively on museums or water-based activities. When choosing your accommodation, you can weigh a focus on nature trails, historic attractions, water access or seasonal offerings.

Places for Further Orientation

If you are considering Cecil as a base for planning your trip, you can also include the towns of Elkton, North East and Rising Sun. What matters is which combination of rivers, trails, history and regional activities best suits your stay.
