Discover Caratunk: Lakes, Waterfalls, and Trails
Accommodation in Caratunk
Lakes, waterfalls, distinctive landforms, and Appalachian Trail routes define Caratunk. Pleasant Pond is a destination for boating and fishing; elsewhere, described routes follow the water or climb uphill. In winter, ice fishing and cross-country skiing are also on offer. Which of these aspects interests you most can help you choose Caratunk as a travel destination and find a suitable vacation rental.
Lakes and Distinctive Landforms
Pleasant Pond is a Great Pond covering more than 10 acres and offers opportunities for boating and fishing. Caratunk also has a local, improved boat launch for freshwater boats at Pleasant Pond. This makes the same body of water a focus both for activities on the water and for a specific access point for boats.
Another natural feature is Baker Pond Falls. The falls begin in a 13-foot-deep gorge and drop 16 feet over a distance of about 50 feet. The waterfalls are notable for their unique geology and scenic beauty; they are also among Maine’s 50 significant waterfalls.
The Caratunk Esker is one of the largest and best-developed eskers in the state of Maine. Its two ridges, each more than 100 feet high, are unusual. The esker covers about 37 acres along Wyman Lake, south of the village. These distinctive ridges, along with the water and waterfalls, add to the landscape for which Caratunk is known.
Trails Along the Water and Up the Mountain
The Appalachian Trail runs through Caratunk. One section follows Pleasant Pond Stream and the northwest shore of Pleasant Pond before climbing Pleasant Pond Mountain. On the way to Pleasant Pond Mountain, the route passes through Caratunk Village and then climbs via Pleasant Pond Road. The descriptions highlight different stretches of landscape: the stream and lakeshore contrast with the climb along the road.
The Kennebec River Crossing, the only staffed crossing along the trail, is also a landmark for navigating the Appalachian Trail. If you are interested in this route, you can take the trail through Caratunk and its connection to Pleasant Pond and the mountain into account when planning your trip. Caratunk is on Route 201, along the Kennebec River south of The Forks.
Winter in Caratunk
The Pleasant Pond Trail is a snowmobile trail in Caratunk. It loops around Pleasant Pond toward South Beach and through the Dimmicks to Baker and Moxie Ponds. ITS 87 loops around Moxie Mountain, Black Nubble, and Cow Mountain and offers impressive views. These named destinations provide a distinct focus for a winter stay, different from the routes along the water.
Ice fishing is also a popular winter activity at Pleasant Pond. Cross-country skiing is another popular winter sport in Caratunk; nearby trails and old logging roads through the forest are suitable for it. These different interests can help determine which vacation rental is right for you: would you rather center your stay on water and fishing, or are winter trails and scenery more important?
A Historical Note
The Arnold Trail to Quebec Historic District is part of Caratunk’s cultural heritage. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 2019. Along with lakes, waterfalls, and trails, this historical connection adds another theme to consider when planning your stay.
