Lakes, Trails, and Distinctive Landscapes
Peaks-Kenny State Park lies on the shore of Sebec Lake and is part of the Central Maine Highlands. Its interconnected trail network is 10 miles long. Those looking for different trail lengths and landscape experiences will find a clear starting point here for planning their day. The Shoreline Trail in Lily Bay State Park has a different character: It offers an easy, 2-mile walk along the shore of Moosehead Lake between the beach and the Rowell Cove Campground.
Nahmakanta Public Lands offer trails along lake shores, to exposed rock outcrops, and through deep forests. The Appalachian Trail passes through Nahmakanta and connects with miles of hiking trails in Maine Parks and Public Lands. Orientation is also aided by six water-accessible campsites on Nahmakanta Lake, as well as several campsites reachable on foot.
Gulf Hagas and Mount Kineo
In Gulf Hagas, the river drops nearly 400 feet in less than four miles through an uninterrupted succession of waterfalls, cascades, and rapids. Gulf Hagas has been designated a National Natural Landmark since 1969. The Gulf Hagas Rim Trail leads to numerous viewpoints overlooking several waterfalls. A short side trail branches off to Screw Auger Falls 0.2 miles after the start of the Rim Trail. Those planning the full loop of the Rim Trail and Pleasant River Tote Road face an 8-mile hike when accessing it via the Appalachian Trail from the Gulf Hagas Parking Area.
Mount Kineo is another special highlight. The mountain has 700-foot-high cliffs, and a converted fire tower with 360-degree panoramic views stands at the summit. Mount Kineo is accessible only by water. In summer, a fee-based commercial boat shuttle runs there regularly from Rockwood. This access situation is therefore essential to include in your planning if Mount Kineo is one of your desired destinations.
Culture, History, and Regional Specialties
The Center Theatre is a historic movie theater and local landmark in downtown Dover-Foxcroft. It offers screenings with regular admission prices as well as private showings. Katahdin Iron Works, which operated from 1843 to 1890, also offers historical insights. Access is via Route 11 north of Brownville Junction: After about 5 miles, turn off; a gravel road then continues for about 6 miles to the destination.
In Williamsburg Forest, interpretive trails lead through 180 acres of historic farmland. Visitors can see the old foundations of the Larsen and Decker homesteads there. For culinary discoveries, there is the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival: It is the largest annual event in Piscataquis County, and visitors can sample more than 100 varieties of whoopie pies.
