Brewer: Riverwalk, Parks and Culture
Accommodation in Brewer
Brewer combines outdoor experiences along the Penobscot River with parks, culture, and seasonal offerings. The Riverwalk, Indian Trail Park, and Clewley Museum each offer something different: sometimes the focus is on walking paths and views, sometimes on history or events. If you’re considering Brewer as a vacation destination, these experiences can help you decide what to prioritize on your trip.
Along the River
The Brewer Riverwalk runs along the banks of the Penobscot River. The path features themed plantings, paved walking paths, and a waterfall. Phase Two extends the Riverwalk to Veteran’s Park near the Penobscot River Bridge. This section includes a tunnel and an outdoor fitness center. So, in addition to a walk, the Riverwalk offers an opportunity to get some fresh-air exercise.
Indian Trail Park in North Brewer offers a different perspective on the river. The four-acre park has scenic views of the Penobscot River and a sledding hill. A hiking trail runs through and beyond the park, with views of the Penobscot River; it offers especially good vistas and an enjoyable hiking experience. The park and trail thus offer different ways to experience the landscape. In the Brewer Riverwalk’s Children’s Garden, chess tables and picnic tables are available for people of all ages.
Activities by Season
For summer water fun, consider the Brewer Municipal Swimming Pool. It is one of the largest outdoor pools in eastern Maine and is open for ten weeks during the summer season. If the pool is important to your travel plans, keep its limited season in mind when choosing your travel dates.
Ice skating is another activity available in Brewer: Caldwell Rink is primarily used for ice hockey, while also encouraging recreational skating. Those interested in the performing arts can visit the Brewer Performing Arts Center, a 487-seat venue. It is located at 92 Pendleton Street in Brewer, Maine. Ten Bucks Theatre produces three performances each year, including Shakespeare Under the Stars, an outdoor performance at Indian Trail Park.
History and Local Markets
The Clewley Museum features an exhibit about Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. He was born in Brewer, was a Civil War hero, and served as governor of Maine. The museum’s mission is to preserve Brewer’s history for future generations. Its focus on history complements the outdoor activities and performing arts.
The Bangor-Brewer and Penobscot County farmers’ markets are located on the Wilson Street side of the auditorium parking lot. They take place Tuesday through Saturday from May 1 to October 31. If a visit to a market is part of your plans, the dates and days of the week provide specific guidance for planning your trip. The markets, the seasonal opening of the outdoor pool, and the performances offer different ways to shape your stay.
When choosing a vacation rental in Brewer, you can consider which aspects of the town matter most for your trip: walking paths and river views, a seasonal activity, history, or a performance.
