Castine combines coastal scenery and maritime experiences with a rich, layered history. During your stay, you can choose from trails overlooking Penobscot Bay, opportunities to observe nature, sea kayaking, and historical insights. Which of these aspects interests you most can also shape your choice of vacation rental and the character of your trip.

Coastal Trails, Woods, and Winter Experiences

At Witherle Woods, more than 4.3 miles of trails wind through a scenic coastal landscape with a rich military history. The trails offer views of Penobscot Bay. The trail network combines outdoor activity with coastal views and historical connections. If you enjoy gathering a variety of impressions outdoors, this offers a different focus from a visit centered primarily on nature observation or culture.

In winter, volunteers groom the cross-country ski trails at Witherle Woods. Another option for cold days is Rene Henderson Preserve: ice skating is possible on the pond once it has frozen over safely. This condition is an essential part of the activity and should be considered when planning your trip.

Rene Henderson Preserve covers 100 acres of mixed-forest uplands and diverse wetlands. Its network of forest roads and trails is 1.7 miles long; along the way, there are opportunities to observe birds and other wildlife.

Experience the Bay from the Water

Castine Kayak Adventures offers guided sea kayaking tours and introductory courses in Penobscot Bay. The small-group eco-tours focus on coastal wildlife and birds, as well as marine ecology, geology, and local maritime history. This lets you choose a water-based experience that combines nature observation with insights into the coastal region.

The offerings also include evening paddling tours, including kayak trips featuring bioluminescence and stargazing. The evening tours have a different focus from the eco-tours: paddling in the evening and observing bioluminescence and stars take center stage. If you want to shape your trip more around experiences on the water, you can factor these options into your choice of accommodations as part of the kind of trip you want.

For boats, floating docks are available at the Town Dock from May 15 through October 15. Docking is permitted there between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., for a maximum of two hours, on a first-come, first-served basis. These time and usage rules are especially relevant if you plan to stop at the dock by boat.

Discover Castine’s History

Fort George was the last British fortification to be evacuated after the American Revolutionary War. The surviving earthworks include square structures that are approximately 200 feet long and ten feet high. The measurements offer a concrete sense of the fortification’s design, while its history points to Castine’s military past.

The Castine Historical Society is located on Castine’s Town Common, in the 1859 Abbott School Building and the 1850 Grindle House. It explores the people, events, and places that shaped Castine and the surrounding Bagaduce River region. It does so through permanent and changing exhibits, talks, tours, and historical reenactments. From June 20 to October 12, the society offers free, one-hour tours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays.

Tours of the Perkins House also bring history to life, focusing on life in Castine in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Together with Fort George and the Historical Society’s offerings, they provide insight into historical places as well as the people and ways of life associated with them.

What Kind of Trip Is Right for You?

The options described differ in subject and format. A plan focused on hiking trails looks different from a trip centered on guided paddling tours or historical walks. Choose your accommodations to suit the kind of trip you want, without assuming that the individual activities imply specific features of a vacation rental.
