Discover Gorham through its varied landscapes and traces of history: from wetlands and woodland in the town center to riverside trails in the north. You’ll also find opportunities for hiking and cycling, as well as places where the city’s history comes to life. As you plan your trip, consider whether you want to focus on nature experiences, activities on the trail network, or local history.

Trails and Nature in Gorham

Gorham’s trail network covers more than 50 miles of varied terrain. It includes paved and gravel surfaces, as well as narrow hiking and cycling trails. The trails run through public, privately owned land open to the public, and quasi-public areas. If you like to plan your vacation around the type of activity, you’ll find different kinds of trails here, though they don’t all have the same surface. The network supports year-round activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, fat biking, and snowmobiling.

The two preserves also offer different geographic points of reference. Frazier Preserve includes wetlands and woodland in downtown Gorham. In the northern part of town, trails in Cummings Preserve run along the Presumpscot River, just south of Dundee Dam. Hiking, running, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing are possible there. The references to the town center and north help you place your outing plans geographically, without treating the two preserves as one continuous route.

Other options include Shaw Park, where you can swim or paddle when you return. Cycling enthusiasts will also find a distinctive addition to the trail network: one of the first pump tracks in southern Maine is located in Gorham. That gives you a range of starting points for active days, from trails across different types of terrain to a pump track.

Historic Sites and Collections

The Baxter House Museum focuses on artifacts related to Gorham’s history, which the museum continues to acquire and exhibit. It’s open from June through August on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and on the first Saturday of the month, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Visits are also possible by special arrangement. Since opening hours vary by season, check them before your visit.

The Gorham Historic District includes 42 buildings in the town center. The Art Gallery at USM offers another way to connect with history: it is housed in a building constructed in 1821 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While the Baxter House Museum presents Gorham’s history through artifacts, a visit to the gallery connects you with a historic building. Together, these places reveal different facets of Gorham’s cultural heritage.

Nature and history also meet at Gambo Preserve, which includes the ruins of a former gunpowder mill. The site was once home to the Oriental Powder Mill, the first and largest gunpowder mill in Maine in 1824. The mill ruins provide a tangible point of historical reference, telling a different story from the museum’s collections or the 42-building Historic District.

Which Side of Gorham Will Shape Your Stay?

When choosing a vacation rental, start by deciding which experiences matter most for your trip. The trail network offers a variety of surfaces and activities, while Frazier Preserve and Cummings Preserve mark different parts of Gorham: the town center and the north along the Presumpscot River. If you’re especially interested in history, you can include the museum, Historic District, gallery, and ruins of the Oriental Powder Mill as separate points of reference in your plans. Compare accommodations based on which Gorham experiences you’d like to focus on; if you plan to visit the Baxter House Museum, be sure to take its seasonal hours into account.
