Aroostook Between Whitewater, Trails and History

Aroostook combines impressive landscapes with an unusually wide range of cultural and winter experiences. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway extends 92 miles from Telos Dam to Twin Brook in Allagash Village. Below Churchill Dam lies Chase Rapids, a Class II whitewater section. Those who want to do more than simply observe nature and instead actively incorporate it into their travel plans will find 30 miles of hiking trails in Deboullie Public Land.

Aroostook State Park also places a clear emphasis on spending time outdoors: It is open for primitive camping and day use. A 6-mile snowshoe trail leads there to the summit of Quaggy Jo Mountain.

Historic Sites and Museums

Aroostook offers opportunities to explore history through a wide variety of themes. The Fort Kent Blockhouse is a National Historic Landmark, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is connected with the “Bloodless” Aroostook War of 1838 to 1839. Today, the Fort Kent Blockhouse serves as a museum. At the Patten Lumbermen’s Museum, by contrast, the history of logging in Maine takes center stage. This includes transporting supplies by bateaux, the stories of river drivers, life in remote logging camps, and the role of bean-hole beans. Also noteworthy is a Lombard Steam Log Hauler, of which only 83 were produced at the beginning of the 20th century. The museum is located along the Katahdin Scenic Byway.

The Acadian Village in Van Buren comprises 17 buildings, seven of which are historic, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Acadian history also includes the Acadian Landing Site, which commemorates the arrival of the first Acadian settlers, and the Acadian Cross Historic Shrine. The marble cross is 14 feet high and represents the first cross erected by the first Acadian settlers in 1785. The Acadian Landing and Tante Blanche Museum complex also includes a 19th-century schoolhouse and the Fred Albert House. The Tante Blanche Museum itself is a wooden building from the 1970s and was named in honor of Marguerite Blanche Thibodeau Cyr.

The Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum and the Northern Maine Museum of Science offer further insights. The model room of a potato house displays old potato sacks, seed cutters, sorting machines, scales, as well as photographs and memorabilia related to the potato harvest. The Northern Maine Museum of Science dedicates its exhibits to chemistry, physics, agriculture, forestry and biology, and also maintains a nature trail on campus. The Maine Potato Blossom Festival in Fort Fairfield is one of the local festivals that celebrate the season.

Winter Days and Active Travel Planning

In winter, the range of options expands to include several clearly distinct activities. Aroostook County has more than 2,000 miles of groomed and mapped snowmobile trails. The 28-mile Aroostook Valley Trail connects Presque Isle, Caribou, Washburn, Woodland and New Sweden. In winter, it is used for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding. In addition, guides in Aroostook County offer guided canoe and kayak tours. Cross-country skiing and biathlon competitions at World Cup and National Cup level take place every winter.

Choosing Accommodation Based on Your Travel Theme

When searching for a vacation rental in Aroostook, it is worthwhile to first determine your preferred vacation theme. For those interested in culture, the Blockhouse, historic villages, museums and evidence of Acadian history are the main attractions. Nature lovers can consider the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, hiking trails and the snowshoe trail on Quaggy Jo Mountain. Those traveling in winter should compare their desired activities—from cross-country skiing to dog sledding—with their own daily itinerary. This way, choosing accommodation becomes not just a question of location, but part of deciding on the right type of trip.
