Poland: Range Pond and Local History
Accommodation in Poland
Poland combines outdoor experiences at Range Pond with local history reflected in its museums and distinctive buildings. Range Pond State Park has a sandy beach swimming area and two easy trails of different lengths and character. Those interested in culture can explore the history of bottling, a building with a history tied to an exposition, and a chapel that now hosts events. Poland thus offers a range of ways to shape a stay, with the flexibility to focus on water, activity, and history in different ways.
Water and Trails at Range Pond
Range Pond State Park has a sandy beach swimming area. For those who want to combine time by the water with some activity, the park also has two easy trails. The Old Camp Trail is 2 miles long, runs along the shore of Range Pond, and is suitable for hiking and snowshoeing. Its length and route along the shore give it a different character from the shorter Railbed Trail.
The Railbed Trail is 1 mile long and has a packed gravel surface. Interpretive signs along the trail introduce natural features of the park.
Museums: From Bottling History to Guided Tours
The Poland Spring Bottling Museum focuses on the history of the original bottling plant and spring house. Both were restored and converted into a museum open to the public. The museum thus connects with the facilities’ former use. New exhibits introduced in 2021 included, in particular, a locomotive and a child-friendly model of a bottling plant. The model is a specific exhibit designed for younger visitors; the locomotive adds a different theme to the exhibits mentioned.
The Poland Spring Museums offer guided, audio-guided, and self-guided tours.
Buildings with Different Stories
The Maine State Building brings together two important dates in its history. It was built in 1893 for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. On July 1, 1895, it was dedicated as a library and art gallery during the Town of Poland’s centennial celebration. Its construction for the exposition and its later dedication for cultural use are distinct milestones that shape the building’s historical background.
All Souls Chapel opened in 1912 as an interdenominational place of worship for Catholics and Protestants. Today, it is a venue for weddings, memorial services, baptisms, concerts, and other important events. Its history thus encompasses both its original religious role and its present-day use for a variety of occasions. The Poland Spring Historic District, in turn, is a historically significant resort complex. Its significance spans health care and medicine, entertainment and recreation, and industry. Those interested in Poland’s past will therefore encounter not only religious and cultural themes here, but also the history of a resort complex with several areas of significance.
