Russell County combines distinctive landscapes with unusual cultural and historical experiences. Rugged shorelines, impressive rock outcrops, historic buildings, and unconventional art make the region a destination for travelers who want to combine nature and discovery. If different interests come together in your family, you can choose to focus your trip on water, wildlife viewing, the scenic byway, or museums.

Wilson Reservoir: Cliffs, Wildlife, and Water Sports

Wilson Reservoir has a rugged shoreline with impressive cliffs and rock outcrops. In Wilson State Park and the surrounding wildlife area, you can observe and photograph deer, pheasants, waterfowl, songbirds, and fur-bearing animals. This opens up different possibilities for a stay: While some travelers primarily want to capture landscapes and animals, others seek activity on the water.

At Wilson Lake, you can go canoeing, motorboating, sailing, water skiing, and recreational boating. Therefore, plan your vacation rental or vacation home according to your preferred travel style and consider which excursions should be the focus for your travel group. You can then determine the specific order of activities individually.

Post Rock Scenic Byway and Unusual Structures

The Post Rock Scenic Byway runs for 16 miles along Highway 232 from I-70 to K-18 near Lucas. Along the route, you can enjoy views of historic limestone posts and panoramic landscapes. In Lucas, the Grassroots Art Center is located on Main Street in three buildings made of native limestone dating from around the turn of the 20th century. The center exhibits self-taught and outsider art and promotes appreciation of it, particularly art environments. For summer 2024, it lists ground-level entrances, ramps, and an elevator, wheelchair-accessible exhibition areas, and materials in alternative formats.

Another notable discovery is the Garden of Eden. S. P. Dinsmoor began building the Garden of Eden and his Cabin Home in 1904 at the age of 64. Post Rock limestone was used for the exterior facade of the Cabin Home. For visitors, the Garden of Eden offers seasonal guided tours of the house interior as well as access to the mausoleum. Bowl Plaza also stands out for its design: The public restroom was created using mosaic techniques based on a shared idea developed by the community, the Grassroots Art Center, and local artists.

Museums from Oil History to Community Life

The Oil Patch Museum presents the history of the Lucky Seven and the drilling of the Carrie Oswald #1 oil well. An outdoor tour displays historic cable-tool drilling rigs, rotary drilling rigs, pulling units, steam engines, and pumpjacks. At the Dorrance Historical Society Museum, you will encounter buggies, buckboards, and agricultural equipment from the community's history. The Deines Cultural Center combines art exhibitions and artistic activities with musical events and concerts, as well as educational and historical programs.

Smaller historic sites also add special touches to the trip. The Fossil Station Museum was built in 1907 as the county jail, sheriff's office, and living quarters; visits are possible by prior private appointment. The second floor of the Reiff Building, a commercial building in the town center, once housed an opera house. The Gernon House has been restored to its original condition and is the oldest stone house in Russell County. Miller's Park includes miniature buildings representing a small town, as well as a rock garden made from stones and shells that the Millers collected on their travels.
