Lyon County combines impressive regional history with nature experiences, culture and trails for active days. Those planning a trip with varied interests can choose between historic homes, a theater visit, wildlife observation, hiking and biking trails, and local market offerings. When searching for a vacation rental or holiday home, it is therefore worth deciding first what you want to focus on: culture, nature, activity or a stopover along a long-distance route.

History and Culture in Lyon County

The Lyon County History Center preserves and presents the county’s history through a collection of more than 150,000 artifacts. Guided tours are available for adult and student groups. The opening schedule runs from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This makes it easy to include a visit as a dedicated cultural activity in your daily itinerary.

Historic buildings also tell the story of the region’s past outside the History Center. The Richard Howe House was built around 1866–1867 by the Welsh immigrant and stonemason Richard Howe. It is considered a rare surviving example of limestone construction from the early settlement period. Red Rocks is the former home of newspaper publisher William Allen White. The house has a seasonal opening period from mid-April to mid-October: Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

For an evening of culture, the Emporia Granada Theatre is a good option. The historic theater was built in 1929 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style and fully restored in 2009. It also regularly hosts live music and events. The Trusler Gallery at the Emporia Arts Center presents exhibitions by local and regional artists. The Arts Center also offers art and craft classes for children and adults. Families can combine these offerings with a museum or theater visit without limiting the trip to a single theme.

Nature, Trails and Active Excursions

The Clinton Eubank Memorial trail system runs along the southeast side of Lyon State Fishing Lake and is suitable for wildlife observation. Camp Alexander covers 90 acres of forests, ponds and gently rolling meadows. It also includes nearly five miles of challenging hiking and biking trails through dense forests and open meadows, as well as a nine-hole disc golf course.

Another distinctive option for outdoor activity is the Flint Hills Trail. The existing corridor is 23.4 miles long and was created by converting a railroad line into a recreational trail. Lyon County and northern communities such as Admire, Allen and Bushong benefit from this trail. No permit is required to use Flint Hills Trail State Park. The specific trail length helps with planning days centered on cycling or longer walks.

Local Character and Trip Planning

Since 1982, the Emporia Farmers Market has brought together locally grown, home-baked and handmade goods from local farmers, gardeners and craftspeople in Lyon County. From June through October, the market is held on Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Wednesdays from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Those who want to discover regional products and handmade goods during their trip can take these times into account when planning their day.

Emporia is located on I-35/335 roughly halfway between Wichita and Kansas City and is suitable as an overnight stop. This is a different type of trip from a stay focused primarily on nature trails or cultural offerings. Accordingly, the choice of accommodation may depend on whether you are using Lyon County as a stopover on a longer drive or planning several days for history, art, a market visit and outdoor activities.

You can find more about the city and its own travel offerings on the destination page Emporia. This will help you better assess before booking a vacation rental which combination of culture, nature and regional experiences fits your travel plans.
