Johnson combines expansive park landscapes, water-based experiences, and an unusually tangible history. If you are looking for a vacation rental or holiday home for a trip, you can use your own interests as a guide when choosing a suitable starting point: nature, water activities, museums, or historic sites may take center stage. The various offerings in Johnson County make it possible to shape your stay according to your desired pace of travel.

Lakes, Trails, and Nature Experiences

Shawnee Mission Park is an important destination for days outdoors. Its lake covers 120 acres and has a swimming beach and a marina. There is also a 44-acre off-leash dog area with paved trails to the lake and beach, as well as trails through grassland and wooded areas. This makes it possible to combine time by the water with walks and nature observation.

Other parks offer a range of different opportunities as well. Cedar Niles Park has four miles of paved multi-use trails, along with 4.5 miles of trails for mountain biking and hiking. Kill Creek Streamway Park currently consists of two separate paved, shared-use trail sections with a total length of approximately 8.9 miles. Kill Creek Park also has a large lake for fishing and boating. The Russell and Helen Means Observation Tower offers views beyond the park.

Heritage Park has a 40-acre lake for fishing and boating. The park also features an 18-hole, par-54 course that is open to the public year-round. Those who prefer plants and gardens will find diverse plant collections covering more than 300 acres at the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Museums and Historic Sites

The Johnson County Museum offers exhibits and programs for learners of all ages and provides a comprehensive look at the county's history. Highlights include a fully electric house from the 1950s that visitors can walk through. The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm is home to the only still-operating stagecoach station along the Santa Fe Trail.

Lanesfield Historic Site is the oldest continuously operating schoolhouse in Johnson County and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Visitors can walk around the grounds during daylight hours; free informational signs are available year-round. The Trail of Death offers another historical perspective: the 660-mile forced-removal route of the Potawatomi tribe in 1838 passed through the area where Heritage Park in Olathe, Kansas, is now located.

Experiences for Different Age Groups

Ernie Miller Nature Center combines knowledge about nature with engaging, hands-on impressions. It features exhibits with live animals and interactive displays. A 500-gallon aquarium showcases native fish from streams. Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead offers children and adults who want to learn about everyday life in the Midwest from a practical perspective an experience of rural life.
