Nature Among Prairies, Wetlands and Woodlands
Warren County combines expansive landscapes with unusual insights into nature, history and regional culture. The Great Western Trail is a 16.5-mile paved trail. It preserves remnants of prairie and wetlands containing several endangered plant species found in Iowa. Along its route are the site of Lida, the site of the ammunition train wreck and fire near North River, and Churchville Prairie. This makes the trail appealing both to people who want to observe landscapes and to travelers who wish to incorporate traces of history into their outings.
The nature at Rolling Thunder Prairie State Preserve is especially varied. The preserve covers 140 acres; together with an 80-acre northern parcel, it forms a contiguous 220-acre wildlife management area. The southwestern 140 acres have never been plowed and contain high-quality prairie plant species. At Woodland Mounds State Preserve, by contrast, 340 acres of upland and floodplain forest provide habitat for numerous wildlife species, including neotropical migratory birds. Along the ridge are cone-shaped earthen mounds associated with burial sites or religious ceremonies of the Woodland culture.
Trails for Active Days
The Summerset Trail runs 11 miles from Carlisle to Indianola along an abandoned railroad corridor. North of Banner Lakes, there is an observation platform suitable for bird-watching and as a resting point during a walk. The different facilities at the access points are useful for planning your day: parking is available in Carlisle, at Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park and in Indianola. Restrooms with running water are available at the trailhead in Indianola, while Carlisle and Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park have dry toilets.
Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park is located on the site of a former coal mine that was converted into a state park in 2004. Travelers who want to combine a nature experience with a manageable trail distance can compare the Great Western Trail and the Summerset Trail as starting points for different day plans. Culture, History and Special Events
Warren County also offers notable destinations away from the trails. Des Moines Metro Opera holds its summer performance season in the 467-seat Pote Theater of the Blank Center for the Performing Arts in Indianola.
The Museum of the Warren County Historical Society and the Heritage Center offer historical insights. The museum is built around the house where George Washington Carver lived while attending Simpson College; he studied there from 1890 to 1891. The Heritage Center presents a one-room schoolhouse, a log cabin, historic shops and churches as preserved examples of everyday life in Warren County. Lake Ahquabi State Park was dedicated in 1936. Several structures, including the stone lodge and picnic shelters, were built during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The Warren County Fair is an annual event whose origins date back to the first fair, held October 1–2, 1855.
Water, Wine and Regional Specialties
For quieter or food-focused days, the Annett Nature Center offers another side of the region. The center is located in the 160-acre ANC Park on a slope above a six-acre pond and a ten-acre wetland. A seven-mile network of hiking trails leads through woods and wetlands to an observation tower. Kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing are available at Lester Pond. In Indianola, Summerset Winery offers wine tastings and tours and produces Iowa wine from locally grown grapes from central Iowa. The Drink Local Tour combines locally produced wine, beer and spirits with food and music in rural areas and small towns. In Cumming, Iowa Distilling Company is located in a century-old brick building near the Great Western Bike Trail; the distillation equipment is visible from the lounge.
