Steuben County: Lakes, Nature and Special Experiences
Accommodation in Steuben County
Steuben County brings together lakes, natural landscapes, winter activities and cultural and historical sites. More than 101 natural lakes are part of the county; Lake James and Snow Lake in Pokagon State Park offer specific opportunities for boating, swimming and fishing. There are also trails through a range of habitats, historic sites and activities ranging from railway experiences to wine tastings. When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: water, nature, history or special events?
Lakes and Landscapes
Pokagon State Park covers 1,260 acres and sits on the shore of Lake James. Within the park, Lake James and Snow Lake offer opportunities for boating, swimming and fishing. The park is near Angola, right off I-69. Other natural areas have their own distinct character: Trine State Recreation Area covers nearly 200 acres of wooded hills, open meadows, unique wetlands and a kettle lake. Robb Hidden Canyon is a steep-walled gorge with a clear stream running through it.
Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve spans more than 400 acres of prairie, natural waterways and lakes; birds also live there. Tours in open-air vehicles are offered. At the preserve’s gift shop, you’ll find bison meat and handmade items. Open-air vehicle tours and a gift shop offering bison meat and handmade items complement the prairie and lake landscape.
Trails and Winter Days
At Potawatomi Nature Preserve, a trail leads through marshes, deep deciduous forests, pines and sand hills. The Rolling Oaks Trail is 2.5 miles long, of moderate difficulty and passes through woodland, wetlands and open meadows. The paved Steuben County Multipurpose Trail offers a different scale: It is 7.4 miles long and runs between Pokagon State Park and Commons Park. The Poka-Bache Connector begins at its northern terminus in Pokagon State Park and runs south through Steuben County and the city of Angola.
In winter, Pokagon State Park offers cross-country skiing, sledding and ice fishing. The refrigerated toboggan run is seasonal and a quarter-mile long. This gives you clearly defined winter activities to choose from, in addition to days by the water; the toboggan run is explicitly a seasonal offering.
History and Culture
Angola’s Commercial Historic Downtown District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. The Steuben County Courthouse is listed on both the State Register and the National Register. Powers Church preserves original oak and butternut woodwork, kerosene lamps and an original pump organ. The Cline House was built in 1891 for Anna Osborn according to the terms of her father’s will. The Pleasant Lake History Museum displays artifacts about the history of the area. These examples range from a historic downtown district and a courthouse to details in a church and a museum.
Experiences and Regional Offerings
The Indiana Rail Experience is operated by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and uses historic 20th-century passenger cars. These include open-air cars, deluxe cars and first-class cars. The trips last anywhere from 45 minutes to a full day—a useful range if you’re planning a shorter outing or a longer activity. Angola Balloons Aloft features balloon rides, family entertainment and a two-day community festival. Event dates are announced separately; check them before adding the festival to your travel plans.
The Steuben County Farmers Market offers local produce and arts and crafts. Satek Winery combines wine tastings and vineyard strolls with handcrafted wines in the rural surroundings of Fremont. For a very different focus, Angola Motorsport Speedway features a highly banked three-eighths-mile asphalt track on a 78-acre site in eastern Steuben County. These offerings differ considerably in whether you’re more interested in culture, regional products or a motorsports facility.
A Vacation Rental to Suit Your Priorities
Choose a vacation rental based on the experiences you want to shape your days. If Pokagon State Park is your main focus, its location near Angola, right off I-69, provides a clear reference point; check whether Angola works for the park days you have planned. For trails, museums, the market or the winery, the locations of those destinations may be the deciding factor.
