There are several common threads to a trip to Hancock County: in Greenfield, the legacy of James Whitcomb Riley meets railroad history, trails, and events. Lark Ranch Greenfield adds a very different set of activities to the mix. Which of these appeals to you most can help you choose a suitable location for your vacation rental.

Riley and Greenfield’s Cultural History

At the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home and Museum, you can learn about Riley’s life and poetry through a pioneer-era homestead and items belonging to the family. The Hancock County Historical Society also keeps Greenfield’s history alive: it operates the Old Log Jail Museum and the Chapel in the Park Museum.

The Riley Festival offers a lively way to experience Riley’s legacy: this four-day October celebration features local arts and crafts, music, food, parades, and family activities. The festival celebrates Riley’s life and legacy. Dates and programming vary from year to year, so if you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the dates for your travel year.

The Jane Ross Reeves Octagon House has its own visiting arrangements: it is open by appointment only. Tours for small or large groups can be arranged in advance. This is a different kind of visit than a festival or an outdoor trail, and it’s worth keeping in mind when planning your day.

Rail-Trails, Park History, and Recreation

The Pennsy Trail follows a former section of the Pennsylvania Railroad and is 5.6 miles long. Its Greenfield section is paved and designed for multiple uses. Amenities there include parking, drinking fountains, accessible restrooms, and exercise equipment.

Depot Street Park also reflects the area’s railroad history: it has railroad-themed swings and picnic tables made from wheels from rolling train cars. The park also has a double amphitheater used for concerts and events. For other interests, you can go birdwatching at Brandywine Park or visit the Riley Park Pump Track, which is open to everyone regardless of skill level.

Another cultural project is still in the planning stages: the Riley Arts Trail is planned as a 0.7-mile concrete loop in downtown Greenfield for multiple uses, connecting the Pennsy Trail with cultural landmarks, shops, and restaurants. The plan also calls for poems by James Whitcomb Riley to be incorporated into the concrete. Seven interpretive panels are intended to showcase Greenfield’s cultural history. The trail should therefore be understood as a planned project, not a completed connection.

A Different Kind of Outing

Lark Ranch Greenfield is located in Hancock County near Interstate 70. Activities and features offered there include pumpkin picking, corn mazes, rides, a one-mile railroad, and hayrides. There are also Highland cattle, giant slides, and jumping pillows. This makes for a very different outing from visiting places associated with Riley or spending time on a rail-trail.

When choosing your vacation rental, you can first consider which experiences you’d like to shape your stay: Riley history and events, trails and parks, or activities at the ranch. Then focus your search on the places that matter for your trip. This lets you compare destinations based on your interests without assuming that a particular property has specific amenities.
