Rock Island combines the vastness of the Mississippi with diverse trails, nature preserves, and a remarkable military and regional history. Those looking for a vacation rental or holiday home can plan their trip according to whether they want to focus on water, activity, nature, museums, or shared discoveries.

Mississippi, Riverfront Trails, and Major Routes

The riverfront trails in Rock Island County are suitable for cycling, inline skating, jogging, and walking. Boat tours are also possible on the Mississippi. You can take a panoramic cruise with the Channel Cat Water Taxi or the Celebration Cruise Line. This makes it possible to experience the river not only from the shore but also from the water.

The region offers several notable connections for longer tours. The American Discovery Trail crosses the Mississippi at Arsenal Island to Rock Island County and connects there with the Illinois Great River Trail. This trail passes the Quad City Botanical Center. The Illinois section of the Great River Road runs along the river via Route 84 and Illinois 92. The Illinois Great River Trail itself is a 62-mile Mississippi River route from Rock Island’s Sunset Marina to Savanna, Illinois. Those who enjoy being active will find different scales here for a day trip or a longer tour.

Forests, Lakes, and Trails with Their Own Character

Illiniwek Forest Preserve offers family-friendly campsites as well as multi-use forest trails with five miles of singletrack and scenic overlooks. The 0.9-mile Prairie Trail is a grass trail with eleven informational panels. Lake George in Loud Thunder Forest Preserve is an artificial lake covering 167 acres, reaching depths of up to 55 feet, with numerous stocked fish species.

Those planning a longer hike can choose the approximately 12-mile Sac-Fox Trail. This continuous, moderately difficult loop trail runs through Loud Thunder Forest Preserve and a small part of the adjacent Loud Thunder Boy Scout Camp. More nature experiences are offered by the 240-acre Martin Conservation Area, with mature oak forest and native prairies, and Amôwa Forest Preserve. Visitors can explore approximately 179 acres of protected land there; at the same time, the area protects species-rich habitat for native pollinators. The Hennepin Canal State Trail extends across five counties in Illinois, including Rock Island County.

History and Culture Along the River

Black Hawk State Historic Site is a 213-acre park that presents the cultural history and diverse natural resources of the Quad Cities. Hiking trails run along the Rock River and through a nature preserve. At the John Hauberg Museum, you can learn about the history of Black Hawk as well as the Sauk and Meskwaki.

On Arsenal Island, the Rock Island Arsenal Museum tells the history of Rock Island Arsenal and Arsenal Island. It collects, preserves, and interprets this history; the exhibitions address, among other topics, the role of various population groups, innovative manufacturing processes, and modern military equipment. The museum opened to the public on July 4, 1905, and is the second-oldest museum of the U.S. Army.

The Colonel Davenport House also combines historical context with a tangible visitor experience. The house was built in 1833–1834 for George Davenport and his family on Arsenal Island, an island in the Mississippi that belongs to the U.S. federal government. Admission includes a tour of the historically furnished house and grounds. Rock Island National Cemetery is one of the 20 oldest national cemeteries in the United States and contains nearly 30,000 burials. The Confederate Cemetery on Rock Island Arsenal is the only surviving remnant of the Rock Island Prison Barracks, one of 21 prisoner camps operated by the Union Army during the American Civil War.

At the Mississippi River Visitor Center, you can look out over Locks and Dam 15, the lock system, the Government Bridge, and river traffic. Locks and Dam 15 was the first project of the 9-Foot Channel Project completed on the Upper Mississippi River. The range of experiences therefore extends from observing the landscape to impressions shaped by technology and history.

Family Outings, Sports, and Special Interests

Niabi Zoo is home to more than 600 animals from nearly 150 species across 40 acres of picturesque forest preserve. Themed tours focus on adaptations, biodiversity, habitats, Africa, cats, reptiles, and careers at the zoo. At the Quad City Botanical Center, the Children’s Garden includes a miniature Mississippi, sandboxes, and the Storybook Landscapes garden area. The Sun Garden features plants from tropical habitats around the world.

For winter sports, Snowstar Winter Sports Park near Andalusia in Rock Island County is another option. The park offers skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and ziplining, with 15 ski and snowboard runs and a 28-acre terrain park featuring more than 20 elements. Golfers will find an 18-hole course at Indian Bluff Golf Course in Milan, Illinois, with smooth fairways, fast greens, and noticeable elevation changes; the course has a par of 70 for men and 71 for women. Art enthusiasts can include the Augustana Center for Visual Culture, which serves the community by collecting, preserving, and exhibiting art.

From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the Backwater Gamblers present free water-ski shows on the Rock River in Rock Island. This is a seasonal item for day planning, while trails, museums, natural areas, and the river provide various other points of focus.

Choosing the Right Starting Point

When choosing your accommodation, it is worthwhile to determine your preferred travel rhythm in advance: a trip focused on the Mississippi, riverfront trails, and boat tours follows different interests than a stay featuring hikes, zoo and garden experiences, or historical museums. Those who want to combine several themes can consider Rock Island as the starting point for their own planning without limiting the trip to just one activity. For further orientation, nearby locations include Moline, Rock Island, Coal Valley, and East Moline.
