Mason County combines diverse sand landscapes, wetlands along the Illinois River, wildlife viewing, and lively events.

Sand Prairies, Forests and Protected Habitats

One focus is the region’s varied landscapes. The Sand Prairie-Scrub Oak Nature Preserve consists of dry sand prairie, dry sand savanna, and dry sand forest. The sand prairies provide habitat for larks, badgers, pocket gophers, and western hognose snakes. In addition, the Tomlin Timber nature preserve encompasses eighteen acres of high-quality dry sand forest. Tomlin Timber is privately owned; access is only permitted with authorization.

The Sand Ridge State Forest also showcases the diversity of the landscape. It includes oak-hickory forests, pine plantations, open fields, grasslands, and sand prairies. Another prominent natural area is Bellrose Island: The 45-acre island lies on the Illinois River and encompasses forests and wetlands. Historically, it was first called “The Isle of Cuba” and later “The Island of Canton.”

Wildlife Viewing and Trail Planning

The Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge provides protection and breeding grounds for migratory birds, fish, and other wildlife. For active days, the refuge has more than five miles of hiking trails. From February 1 through October 15, it is accessible on foot, by bicycle, and by boat. This information can help you take your preferred vacation pace into account when searching for accommodation.

At the Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge, the focus is on fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, wildlife information, wildlife photography, and environmental education. The Jake Wolf Memorial Fish Hatchery in Mason County enhances the nature experience with a visitor center featuring informational exhibits about fish and aquaculture. From the visitor center’s observation areas, visitors can watch the various stages of fish production.

River Landscapes and Special Places

The Havana Riverfront Campground has twelve sites along the Illinois River next to the Havana Nature Center. Rockwell Mound also offers an unusual landmark for an exploration tour: It covers nearly two acres and is fourteen feet high.

As a destination in its own right, Havana deserves attention. The “Havana's First Fridays & Night Market” event series takes place downtown and includes evening shopping, live music, and an art exhibition. Havana also hosts an annual Oktoberfest with food, music, and family activities.

Local Markets and Relaxed Vacation Days

The Farmers’ Market in Havana takes place on Saturday mornings throughout the summer and until the beginning of fall. Fresh treats and produce are available there. Another option for a break is Tall Timbers Marina in Havana, a stop for burgers, hot dogs, and cold drinks that can be visited on foot or by boat.

When searching for a vacation rental in Mason County, it is therefore worthwhile to determine your preferred focus in advance: Should your stay primarily center on sand prairies and wildlife viewing, should water, environmental education, and river landscapes take center stage, or would you also like markets, music, and local festivals?
